Had their famous Maharaja Thali also known as Baahubali Thali. First impression is that it looks great... Watching a big plate full of food. But, remember looks are deceptive. This ₹ 2600 + GST Thali is a big disappointment. They will tell you that four people can get it, but trust me, two good eaters will finish it. It appeared to us, that this Thali was overpriced and had empty items. When I mean 'empty items' I mean, the fish curry has no fish (not even a small piece) and the crab curry has no crab. Fish curry with fish was plated twice. One in a big bowl and other in a small bowl. When asked the supervisor as to why fish curry was plated twice, his response was that it was two different fish curries made using two different fishes. My point is, when you don't serve fish along with the curry, then why serve two fish curries. The chicken curry and mutton liver curry had meat in them. So, when confronted as to why the chicken curry and mutton liver curry have pieces, but why the fish curry and crab don't have pieces, the supervisor had no justifiable reason and simple smiled. The vanjiram fish fry was not upto the mark and I felt that the fish was not the catch of the day and could be a day or two oid. There were certain items missing, and were added to our thali after questioning (like egg onion fry added later). Two Biryanis were given, one chicken and one mutton. Each biryani had only one small piece of meat with bone. Both biryani's puttogether will be equate to one half biryani available in any other normal Restaurant. No raita for the biryani and again the same was served only after questioning. The biryani's were bland and dry. Not at all tasty. Some items like chicken fry, fish finger, noodles and naan were palatable.

The most important point to note is that, don't get carried away by their number of items served. Even condiments like mayonese is counted as a item. Other items include, rasam, sambar, potato curry, two bowls of white rice, appalam, curd rice. We go to ponnusamy for their non veg and when was the last time, one went to ponnusamy to eat rasam, potato, curd rice etc.?

My honest opinion is that this Maharaja Thali is definitely not worth the money and if you want to enjoy Ponnusamy's food, you are better off by individually ordering their food and satisfying your taste buds. In that way, when you order fish curry, you sure to get a piece of fish.

This so called 'Maharaja Thali' according to me is only a 'sippoy thali' and you don't need a Baahubali to finish it, Pingalathevan (Palvaalthevan's...

Ponnusamy is a legendary restaurant. Moreover, this Branch in Royapettah is one of renowned one. After seeing a promition about the Large Thali a month back, I called up the restaurant recently to check its availability. Fortunately, it was still On. I was told to confirm the order a day before which was unusual. As the Thali itself was an unusual one I could understand the need. The cost of the Thali was Rs.1500 and the restaurant allowed it being shared by max 4 people. You get more than 30 items in it with just few veg items. The Ambience was good enough compared to many Chetinad restaurants. It was super crowded being a Sunday amidst the long Pongal holidays. After waiting for nearly 20mins we got the table. I had confirmed my presence and reminded them about my special Thali order. Still, we had wait for another 15 mins after getting seated. Then came the big Thali. Wow!! Never seen such a big plate. It was at 3-4 feet in diameter. There were many items in it. Chicken soup, Crab soup, Chicken dry, prawn fry, Mutton liver fry, Chicken Biriyani, Mutton biriyani, Veg Pulav, curd rice, white rice, Naan, chappathi, Bajji, pakoda, panneer butter masala, papad, vatthal, Banana, Beeda.... Chicken gravy, fish gravy, Mutton gravy and some more items.. OMG it was a feast and I'm sure one person can't finish it. Probably, 2 foodies can. We ordered 2 Thalis for 6 adults and 2 kids and it was sufficient. The bearers gave extra rasam, curd and rice too. Taste of few items were very good and few was just okay.. Overall, it was a good experience and a One time...

10 family members went to Ponnusamy l, Roypettah for lunch at 2 pm today i.e 23-01-21.. Overall not satisfied with the food nor the service. Paid bill of Rs. 6800.00 Reasons below.

Briyani came 30 minutes from time of order and three 3 reminders later

Mutton briyani had pieces only from curry (kolambu) and did not have the actual pieces from the briyani itself which is inappropriate. When enquired why, they said it was because we rushed the order!!!

All prices in the menu card are for 1/4 or quarter portions only. Though its mentioned in the menu card, its highly misleading

Vanjaram fish fry and nethili fry weren't good. They had an old taste

Resent one of the mutton briyanis back as it was cold. They heated and served the same portion, so it had a fried texture rather than natural briyani texture

Ordered 2 NV meals, but had to keep calling for rice and curry refills as there were no one around to pro actively ask if we needed anything

Enjoyed crab masala mutton chukka

Sura puttu was tasty but it lacked seasoning hence it was not spicy

Due to all this haggling and chasing lost appetite personally..

Planned to visit this particular restaurant for nostalgic reasons. While we had a good family bonding reminiscing olden days and our previous visits to this hotel, the taste of the food and service etiquettes weren't up...

Ponnusamy Hotel is a legendary Chettinad restaurant in Royappetah. The restaurant opened in 1954 by Mr. A.R Velu Pillai & his younger brother Mr Ponnusamy (was just a teenger), they hailed from Hanumanthakudi near Devakottai . These two managed to rented a small place in the present area in Royapettah as a small eatery. Though it was small they were a highly dedicated duo. Initially one would cook and the other served their delectable fare and this started their legendary journey of excellence in food. The place is always filled with customers afternoon and night. Their top notch food is the Tamil Nadu meals which comes with Fish Curry, Mutton Curry and Chicken Curry, Rasam (excellent) accompanied by Rice, vegetable accompaniment called poriyal and Kootu, They have a dedicated car park for customers which is a blessing. The mutton Chukka and the Prawn semi dry dish was excellent. I was filled to the brim when I got up. Never miss a chance to try Ponnusamy Restuarant when you have a chance. You will not regret it.

This Chennai local restaurant is simple, no frill eatery that boasts excellent food when it comes to lunch thaali. The price is very reasonable, the service is excellent and above all the thaali meal is very delicious for any person who grew up in Chennai enjoying the local vegetarian lunch meal. The unlimited meals consists of two dry curries, buttermilk Kozhambhu(a veg gravy made with buttermilk), puli Kozhambhu(a veg curry made with tamarind base), lentil pappads, south Indian pickle, Sambhar ( a type of lentil based veg curry) and a very very tasty rasam(South Indian clear soup made with tomato base and spices). Best thing is that all items were not overpowered with salt and oil, as most restaurants in Chennai do. The waiting staff were very attentive and were on their toes in replenishing any items as needed. I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Chennai for a decent budget meals that is healthy and delicious.
