During my recent culinary adventure in Chennai, I had the pleasure of dining at Murugan Idli Shop, a renowned establishment known for its authentic South Indian delicacies. Among the array of mouth-watering options, I opted for the Ghee Karam Podi Dosa and the Ghee Podi Idli. Both dishes were nothing short of tempting and left a lasting impression on my taste buds.
The Ghee Karam Podi Dosa was a masterpiece of flavors and textures. The dosa, a traditional South Indian crepe made from fermented rice and lentil batter, was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The generous application of ghee, a type of clarified butter, added a rich and aromatic layer of flavor that elevated the dish to new heights.
The highlight of the dosa was the karam podi, a spicy and aromatic powder made from a blend of roasted lentils, red chilies, garlic, and other spices. This fiery podi was sprinkled generously over the dosa, infusing it with a delightful heat and a burst of umami flavors. The combination of the crispy dosa, the aromatic ghee, and the spicy karam podi was truly irresistible.
Served with an assortment of chutneys and sambar, the Ghee Karam Podi Dosa offered a well-rounded and satisfying meal. The coconut chutney provided a cooling contrast to the spicy podi, while the tangy tomato chutney and the flavorful sambar added depth and variety to each bite.
The Ghee Podi Idli was another standout dish that exemplified the art of South Indian cuisine. The idlis, soft and fluffy steamed rice cakes, were drenched in ghee, giving them a luxurious and melt-in-the-mouth texture. The ghee not only enhanced the flavor of the idlis but also added a delightful richness that was incredibly satisfying.
What made the Ghee Podi Idli truly special was the podi, a flavorful spice mix similar to the one used in the dosa. The podi was generously sprinkled over the idlis, coating them with a spicy, nutty, and aromatic layer that was simply divine. Each bite of the ghee-soaked idli combined with the spicy podi was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that left me craving for more.
The Ghee Podi Idli was served with a side of chutneys and sambar, allowing me to explore different flavor combinations. The creamy coconut chutney, the tangy tomato chutney, and the hearty sambar complemented the idlis perfectly, adding an extra dimension to the overall dining experience.
In conclusion, my visit to Murugan Idli Shop in Chennai was a gastronomic delight. The Ghee Karam Podi Dosa and the Ghee Podi Idli were exceptional dishes that showcased the rich culinary heritage of South India. The use of ghee and the aromatic podi elevated these traditional dishes to a whole new level of indulgence. If you find yourself in Chennai, a visit to Murugan Idli Shop is a must for an authentic and memorable South Indian...

Anything with their hot ghee always stands out; be it their Ghee podi idli or Ghee podi dosai/Uthappam. The layer of ghee and podi on the idly would be as much as the size of the idly, TOO GOOD!!
The podi on the dosa is similar to little droplets of rain on sand, soft, buttery and spicy with the chutneys. A little bit of onion on top of these makes it WHATTAWOW, Onion uthappam.
Chettinad dosai & Mysore dosai were the other tryouts. While the masala and the spices were high on the former, it definitely had a kick from the authentic southern spices. Mysore dosa had good fillings.
Hot & soft Medu vadai was great when dipped in sambar; some prefer to soak it but that crunchy texture matters a lot for a vada
Sweet pongal & Kuzhi paniyaram - OH WOW, that pongal flows like a river from the ghee with so sweet stuff all around, toasted cashews & raisins if you're lucky. Paniyaaram can be a better companion for your beverage than any other biscuits.
Limited seating with lightning fast service. Parking can always be a problem with no space on the main road. One of the most economical dine-in eatery in the heart...
