Can honestly say this was the worst dining experience of my life and that is no exaggeration! Normally me and my wife wouldn't dream of eating in an Italian restaurant in Bali and would eat local cuisine. But after 11 days of local warungs we needed some variety, this is the biggest mistake I've ever made! So we booked our table in advance as after reading the reviews about the place it seemed really good and looked as though it got very busy. We arrived 5 minutes earlier than our reservation time and was shown to our table. It was the furthest table away from anything, tucked right away in the back far right of the restaurant, not the best start. 15 minutes then passed until anybody even bothered to come and take either a drink and/or food order. 5 minutes later we finally receive our first drinks. 10 minutes later our starter arrived, which was ok however nothing special. By this point I've already finished my first beer and ordered another one. 5 minutes pass... still no sign of my second beer, I ask one of the other waiting staff about it, another 5 minutes pass and still no alcoholic beverage, I repeat the process again and another 5 minutes pass... still no sign of this really hard to find local beer called Bintang. It's not like I've seen at least 3 other tables receive their drinks in the time I've been waiting. So its now aporoximately 55 minutes since ordering and no sign of our mains or my elusive second beer. We only ordered two very simple pizzas mind. By this point I've completely lost patience with the complete incompetence and frankly abysmal service in this restaurant and ask a waitress to cancel our mains and bring me the bill for the one starter and one round of drinks we've so far been served in almost an hour. 5 minutes later another waitress comes over and asks what the problem is? My patience wears even thinner now. I simply say that I want my mains cancelled and wish for the bill as we are leaving, due to the poor service or lack of. This being the second time I've stated this now to two separate people! 5 further minutes pass and my bill does not materialise, however what does is the two pizzas we ordered over an hour ago which I have since asked to cancel on two separate occasions! Needless to say i wasn't impressed and even after the wait, the food did not even look edible. But we tried to eat some of it as it was there now. I will add that I have still not received the elusive second beer even by this point. My wife asks for said beer for a fourth time as the pizzas are placed down. It never appeared! I managed two mouthfuls of that disgusting rubber like thing they called a pizza and could eat no more. Now I ask for the bill and third and final time and decide to cut my losses and go and eat somewhere else. The bill arrives this time in a timely fashion. To the restaurants credit due to us questioning the time it has taken for our food and probably the fact that most of it was inedible they kindly removed the pizzas from our bill. I don't even think most of the random dogs or cats wandering the streets of Bali would even go anywhere near eating the food we was served this evening. But alas I am going off topic now. So we paid and left and went a few restaurants down to enjoy a Greek gyro where we was sat down, fed and watered all in 20 minutes! Shock... miracles do happen! So yes avoid this place unless you want to waste aporoximately 90 minutes of your life being ignored, with an unquenchible first and like being served...
Read moreAnother lovely place to drop by for some of the best Italian food you can find in the heart of Seminyak.
Lovely location and architecture of the entire restaurant. Upon arrival you’re greeted with a step-format of seating overlooking the bustling streets, which is available either as a waiting area or for those customers who prefer to just have a few drinks and order a light dish or two. Really cool concept as this was a first time for me.
Upon walking up towards the restaurant, you have access to a soft incline path which has its walls beautifully decorated. Extra points for the differently-abled friendly access.
The main restaurant seating is also quite stunning and romantic. Open rooftop overlooking the beautiful Bali sky. Dark and dim themed dining area which provides a mysterious vibe of its own. The menu had to be viewed with the help of flashlights given by the restaurant which was a nice touch as well.
The food we ordered was fantastic as well. The burrata salad was tasty till the last bite, however we just wished it was slightly more softer to the chew. The Aglio Olio ordered by us had been accommodated to be prepared without meat. It was a fine dish with generous amounts of garlic and EVOO which enhanced the taste. The ricotta spinach ravioli was a treat to be had as well. The authentic mushroom flavors with sage herb butter were mouth watering. The dish was generously cheesy as well, which was loved by us all. Chocolate Fondant Cake takes its sweet time to be prepared. So make sure to check with your waiter and order earlier. But a beautifully crafted dessert which warm melted chocolate oozing out as soon as you dig your spoons inside. (The tiramisu was out of stock or we would’ve gone for that!)
The reason for awarding 4 stars: The margarita pizza ordered was more on the basic side. I wish they had a few more well tailored options in the Pizza section for vegetarians dining at the restaurant. I also felt the dough of the pizza could be more soft and authentically made. Having eaten at multiple Italian places in Bali, we felt this dough could be better. The quantity in the Aglio Olio spaghetti could have been slightly more. We felt it was a little bit less. The cocktail ordered by me (La Viola) was filled with ice from the bottom to the top. I understand drinks are all pre-measured, but this one felt like I got less for my money. I wish the waiter made me aware of this earlier.
Although I am a non-vegetarian, I decided to dine at Ultimo as a vegetarian as I prefer to not like Italian meats so much. Would love to add they have a lovely premium cuts selection to choose from, as well as a fully functional dry-ager with expensive meats.
But nevertheless, a wonderful dining experience with my family at Ultimo Restaurant with a great vibe and good food. Service was top-notch as well, as the waiters were always attentive and on the lookout for us customers.
A must visit and should be added to your list of fine Italian restaurants in Seminyak to choose from when deciding a...
Read moreHad been here in the past - it used to be much better. We arrived and were seated. We were only given one drinks menu so when I opened it, the server immediately came over and asked what we wanted to drink. My partner hadn’t had a chance to look at the drinks menu so there was an awkward wait with the server hovering over while we tried to quickly decide what to drink.
Ordered a starter of calamari - it wasn’t the best tasting, half the calamari rings were stuck together - indicating that it was a frozen product.
Also had the mozzarella and tomato salad. It was fine, although the tomatoes were quite bland tasting, not much tomato flavour.
For mains we had the carbonara pasta and lasagne.
The carbonara was extremely dry, no creamy sauce and it was made even drier with a LOT of finely grated (tasted from a package, not freshly grated) and thickly shaved Parmesan cheese (not proper parmigiano reggiano) slathered all over the top. Normally, people would add the cheese on top themselves. They can decide how much they want - we weren’t given that choice. It was not eaten - the server didn’t ask why it wasn’t eaten or how the meal was.
The lasagne was okay, not the best tasting we’ve had. They advertised to have the ‘best’ meat but it didn’t taste like it. I wouldn’t order again.
Only salvaging thing was that we had the crème brûlée - it was the only yummy thing we had. Hence the 2 star review.
We spent $100 AUD (1,000,000 IDR) so it wasn’t a cheap meal. Wouldn’t go back again which is a shame because it used to be a really nice place.
I actually threw up afterwards as it wasn’t sitting right in my stomach - so quite...
