Utterly insane racist sadist people running the place. Please stay away. We were a group of 15 people as part of a team outing went into the pub. The ambiance was nicely set. We all bought drinks and started finding places to sit in. While I was taking a drink and going in, I saw that one of my colleague was being blocked by an old man. I initially thought it was someone having some pub fun, but then in a short while it became serious. The old man was asking my colleague to leave, and repeatedly, pushing him slowly out. We went and asked them man and also sought help from the pub staff. The staff too came in and said that our colleague should go out (just him) coz he wouldn’t drink. We were a group of 15+, all others were drinking mostly more than one and yet they wanted one colleague to leave. We all left, at the end. I strongly feel that the behavior exhibited was for racial reasons and it was discriminatory for sure. The pub is a disgrace to the amazing Irish pub, kind hearted, fun, and welcoming people and the land of Ireland.

I’ve been to Frank Ryan’s two times: both of the times we had excellent pizzas and pints, probably the best one you can get close to Smithfield square. It’s not the typical Neapolitan pizza, but very crunchy, tasty and with good toppings. The service cannot be rated more than 3 stars: the first time we went there one of manager was a bit arrogant with us, the second time everything went smooth. It’s true that they don’t give tap water, you have to buy mineral water if you want to drink. Regarding the atmosphere: I didn’t find the place “racist” as described in other reviews but I would suggest to reduce the volume of the music, a bit too loud.

Old world kinda place in the middle of a not so nice part of town..when you walk in it's hard to distinguish wheather the smell is coming from the toilets the dishwasher or if the floors have just been cleaned with bleach..the smell of B/O from all the hippies and earthy type people is something you just have to get used to..leaving all that aside the place is nice and snug dimly lit(which suits some people) and spacious enough.. drink prices are reasonably priced and staff can be run off their feet at times..well worth a visit..

Use to frequent there after work most nights when this pub was an Institution of Smithfield . 10 and 15 years ago

Always a great pub with other workers and students from Blackhall . This was during the so called last recession too . Pool table , good music , cheap pints (by Dublin standards) and just the humble cheese toastie (some pubs just shouldn’t do food they don’t have the facilities, not sure I want to smell someone else’s pizza but one has to do something to make money . . The bar staff were more regular and sound even the grumpy owner

Haven’t been there much in the last 5 years . 2 or 3 times , most recent was 3 weeks ago . Jesus it seems that it’s gone to the dogs abit . Dead enough too .

Was under the illusion that it was under new management as he wasn’t around but judging by the other reviews that clearly isn’t the case - he always was a bit pretentious Johnny Rotten type but normally he was grand , in small doses . You have to humour him when he tries to chat and take his slaggings on the chin .

What’s with the lack of lighting ? It always had a dim lighting (within reason ) but it’s ridiculous now especially going to the toilet or out to back for a smoke .

There isn’t much natural light in the pub bar up at the front . Accident waiting to happen .

No pool table either . See price of the pint of Guinness is up too €6 (granted probably still cheaper than other Dublin pubs )

Completely different clientele too but things always change .

The pints are still good and the place is fine once you get use to the lightening - stay up the front -must be going hardcore to save money on electricity which is dead expensive now of course .

It really amuses me the amount of people whinging about walking into an Irish pub thinking that they can only order tap water and take up space for 1-2 hours .

I get the fact that some are designated drivers but the cheek and entitlement of others . Lol. Taking up space , no publican wants that . Far from the only pub in Dublin who targets those people

it seems that there’s a common denominator with those people - no offence , a bit of culture tip : don’t expect to be allowed to walk in to a busy Irish pub (and especially one that isn’t busy ) and think that you should not be expected to buy some drink even non alcoholic . You haven’t really got any reason to feel insulted . It’s the height of ignorance .

Your presence in the pub is in the basis of being a paying customer . It’s irrelevant if you are with 3-6 people . Try that in a cafe or elsewhere and see how long...

I went to this place with my husband and five other friends. We ordered three drinks and two pizzas to share – five items in total for seven people. The waiter – who I want to emphasize was very kind and professional, and absolutely not to blame – came over and told us that, according to the owner’s policy, each person at the table had to order something.

We politely explained that we would be sharing and had already ordered five items, including two pizzas costing at least €15 each – not just glasses of water. To avoid any issues, I offered to order a bottle of water. But the waiter told us we were still short one item. So I asked for two bottles of water.

He brought them and charged me seven euros for the two bottles. Seven freaking euros for two small bottles of water. Just before, at the pub across the street, I had paid less than that for a beer and a soft drink.

I told him he could take the water back – because that’s not how you treat customers. The waiter, again very kind, said this is how it works in all bars, but I work in a bar myself, and I know that’s not true.

There were even free tables nearby, so we weren’t taking up space that someone else could’ve used. My husband and I ended up leaving because we didn’t want to drink, just eat some pizza with our friends. The two seats we left stayed empty.

In the end, this business didn’t just lose the seven euros from the water – it lost seven future customers. I have never been treated this way before. By far the worst experience I’ve ever had in any place. Not...

My friends and I (a group of 7) went to this pub, where we ordered a pizza and a beer for 20€. The place was extremely dark, almost uncomfortably so. From the moment we arrived, I felt a heavy, uncomfortable stare from the owner. Maybe it was just my impression at first, but the way things played out made it hard to ignore.

We ordered 5 items to share, which seemed fair and normal for a group that simply wanted to enjoy the evening together. Despite the venue being far from full, we were told we had to order 7 items, one per person. The cheapest option was a bottle of water at 3.50€, which we found excessive. Two people from our group decided to leave, which clearly ruined the atmosphere for the rest of the night.

The server was polite and handled things as best he could this wasn’t his fault. What bothered us was the owner’s attitude. He didn’t speak to us or try to resolve the situation. Instead, he sat facing us, watching us the whole time, which felt very uncomfortable and borderline intimidating.

To be honest, it also felt like we were treated differently because we didn’t look Irish. The way things were handled gave the impression of bias, and it was deeply unsettling. All of us work in hospitality, and none of us have ever seen or implemented a policy like this in our own establishments. We left feeling shocked, disappointed, and...
