Use to frequent there after work most nights when this pub was an Institution of Smithfield . 10 and 15 years ago
Always a great pub with other workers and students from Blackhall . This was during the so called last recession too . Pool table , good music , cheap pints (by Dublin standards) and just the humble cheese toastie (some pubs just shouldnât do food they donât have the facilities, not sure I want to smell someone elseâs pizza but one has to do something to make money . . The bar staff were more regular and sound even the grumpy owner
Havenât been there much in the last 5 years . 2 or 3 times , most recent was 3 weeks ago . Jesus it seems that itâs gone to the dogs abit . Dead enough too .
Was under the illusion that it was under new management as he wasnât around but judging by the other reviews that clearly isnât the case - he always was a bit pretentious Johnny Rotten type but normally he was grand , in small doses . You have to humour him when he tries to chat and take his slaggings on the chin .
Whatâs with the lack of lighting ? It always had a dim lighting (within reason ) but itâs ridiculous now especially going to the toilet or out to back for a smoke .
There isnât much natural light in the pub bar up at the front . Accident waiting to happen .
No pool table either . See price of the pint of Guinness is up too âŹ6 (granted probably still cheaper than other Dublin pubs )
Completely different clientele too but things always change .
The pints are still good and the place is fine once you get use to the lightening - stay up the front -must be going hardcore to save money on electricity which is dead expensive now of course .
It really amuses me the amount of people whinging about walking into an Irish pub thinking that they can only order tap water and take up space for 1-2 hours .
I get the fact that some are designated drivers but the cheek and entitlement of others . Lol. Taking up space , no publican wants that . Far from the only pub in Dublin who targets those people
it seems that thereâs a common denominator with those people - no offence , a bit of culture tip : donât expect to be allowed to walk in to a busy Irish pub (and especially one that isnât busy ) and think that you should not be expected to buy some drink even non alcoholic . You havenât really got any reason to feel insulted . Itâs the height of ignorance .
Your presence in the pub is in the basis of being a paying customer . Itâs irrelevant if you are with 3-6 people . Try that in a cafe or elsewhere and see how long...
Read moreI went to this place with my husband and five other friends. We ordered three drinks and two pizzas to share â five items in total for seven people. The waiter â who I want to emphasize was very kind and professional, and absolutely not to blame â came over and told us that, according to the ownerâs policy, each person at the table had to order something.
We politely explained that we would be sharing and had already ordered five items, including two pizzas costing at least âŹ15 each â not just glasses of water. To avoid any issues, I offered to order a bottle of water. But the waiter told us we were still short one item. So I asked for two bottles of water.
He brought them and charged me seven euros for the two bottles. Seven freaking euros for two small bottles of water. Just before, at the pub across the street, I had paid less than that for a beer and a soft drink.
I told him he could take the water back â because thatâs not how you treat customers. The waiter, again very kind, said this is how it works in all bars, but I work in a bar myself, and I know thatâs not true.
There were even free tables nearby, so we werenât taking up space that someone else couldâve used. My husband and I ended up leaving because we didnât want to drink, just eat some pizza with our friends. The two seats we left stayed empty.
In the end, this business didnât just lose the seven euros from the water â it lost seven future customers. I have never been treated this way before. By far the worst experience Iâve ever had in any place. Not...
Read moreMy friends and I (a group of 7) went to this pub, where we ordered a pizza and a beer for 20âŹ. The place was extremely dark, almost uncomfortably so. From the moment we arrived, I felt a heavy, uncomfortable stare from the owner. Maybe it was just my impression at first, but the way things played out made it hard to ignore.
We ordered 5 items to share, which seemed fair and normal for a group that simply wanted to enjoy the evening together. Despite the venue being far from full, we were told we had to order 7 items, one per person. The cheapest option was a bottle of water at 3.50âŹ, which we found excessive. Two people from our group decided to leave, which clearly ruined the atmosphere for the rest of the night.
The server was polite and handled things as best he could this wasnât his fault. What bothered us was the ownerâs attitude. He didnât speak to us or try to resolve the situation. Instead, he sat facing us, watching us the whole time, which felt very uncomfortable and borderline intimidating.
To be honest, it also felt like we were treated differently because we didnât look Irish. The way things were handled gave the impression of bias, and it was deeply unsettling. All of us work in hospitality, and none of us have ever seen or implemented a policy like this in our own establishments. We left feeling shocked, disappointed, and...
