Update - so they have responded below (not sure if the response will still be there after I edit this). They ignored my suggestions for putting a few signs up and explaining rules to people and instead advised I should have gone and spoken to reception and blamed energetic students. Not sure how many times I'd have had to go down to report an issue but conservatively it'd be over 10.
I paid 150 Euro for a room with a shared bathroom. Their reply on here was poor and to make matters worse they haven't replied to my email or my chaser. Knocking this down to 1 star.
Also read some of the issues some of the people leaving the 4 and 5 star reviews had...
Original review: I should note that I did email Generator earlier this week to complain and have had no response. You'll also see other reviews here where people mention the noise with responses saying these were being taken seriously. Nothing seems to have changed since those reviews.
If you are deaf or one of those people who can sleep through an earthquake this would no doubt be fine. Stayed for one night (Saturday) in a single room (no ensuite) and the noise overnight was insane.
Between 0100 and 0430 I experienced the following - multiple people having loud conversations in the hallways, slamming doors, squeaky doors (someone needs to run round with some WD-40), someone playing a weird dance version of Irish traditional music and humming loudly outside my door (that one was at 0415), some shouting "Watsooooon" at the top of their lungs (0145) as if they had just found their nemesis at last.
Oh and I was on the courtyard and whilst my window was closed every other window was open. What that meant practically was that I could hear everything from the dorms including loud "banter" and a raging arguement (about 0330 for that one).
I got just under 4 hours sleep in two sessions. There are literally no signs up telling people to be quiet or considerate which is a bit wild. No staff seemed to check on the hallways at any point.
Other stuff was fine, people complaining about the bathrooms being a bit messy need to remember it's a hostel (even if it does cost the same as a hotel in other cities). I used the showers and it was fine. The main problem here is that the toilet and shower facilities are on level 1 (for women) and level 2 (for men). So bear in mind if you're on another floor you'll have to walk to get there which is not comfortable to do at night with drink people around. But hats off to the dude on Sunday morning walking to the showers in his pants.
The single room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The location is also great, and it's a nice walk into the city along the river.
I get my experience may be to do with the crowd staying there being inconsiderate but the walls / doors are paper thin. I could even hear the snorer in...
Read moreGOT TRANSFERRED FROM FEMALE ONLY TO MIXED ROOM, AND THEN GETTING VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BY MY “HOMELESS” ROOMIES!
I’de planned to stay at the Generator from 10 th till 14 th of June.
On the first night I asked the receptionist for the lower bunk in the middle of the night. This was because the top bunk was hard to get down from, if you wanted to use the bathroom, in the middle of the night. There was nothing to hold onto going down, and I almost fell off the stairs. The staff was very friendly and considerate and I ended up getting a room transfer. What they forgot to mention, is that the room was a mixed room and not a female only room (where I previously stayed in). I had found that out in the morning…. This was unfortunate, but not the thing I am angry about.
WHAT HAPPEND NEXT WAS THE THING THAT ACTUALLY SHOCKED ME, AND RUINED MY STAY....
On Wednesday the 12 th two new guests arrived in the room. Later that day I saw them in the room again. They both got out of the bathroom and started talking to me. They told me they were homeless and lived on the street and over the last few days they saved up some money for a stay at this hostel. Thereafter they asked me if I wanted to go for a walk and get weed with them. I kindly declined, but they kept asking me. After declining the offer many times, they looked at my shoes and other belongings. One of them held his foot next to my shoe and told me we had the same size shoes. Before I knew it they came closer to my bed and they cornered me, continuing to ask me questions. Trying to get me to take a walk with them. The situation was getting tense, and the situation between the two also got tense. They started arguing in front of me….
When they finally left for their walk, I went to the bathroom. The bathroom was full of hair and dirt ( Also not a great thing). Then I went to the reception to transfer to another room. I told them that two people in my room made me uncomfortable. Unfortunately they didn’t have a proper room I could stay in. Right after I booked another hotel, and I checked out. I didn’t get a refund……..
THE AREA IS ALSO NOT SAFE, PROTECT YOUR TOURIST AT LEAST IN THE HOSTEL. DO BETTER!!
I just don’t get why they got in!! I expected in the worst case at least a call to ask if I would be alright with sharing the room with the homeless. I’ve also noticed that around the hostel there are a lot of homeless and junks bothering tourists. So it is a big issue in that area… I am disappointed, a hostel where a lot of young adults and alone travelers stay should be a...
Read moreThe general consensus of the Generator is that I did something wrong in the past life and now for the one night only I'm being punished for it. The feeling of being there as a punishment didn’t start from me, oh no. The staff at the reception definitely committed a heinous crime of stealing an apple from a hedgehog and now the universe is paying back with perpetual lack of a smile and an absence of an original thought of being helpful. I’m also pretty sure there is an internal limit of words that the staff can vocalise every day and the trophy of the receptionist of the month is silently snatched by the one who kept it to themselves the most. Now back to punishing me. I have booked a mix dorm of 8 as I usually do when travel. Mix dorms don’t bother me. There is usually a good mix of gender in the room (the clue is in the name) and privacy curtain to keep the room nice and civil… UNTIL.. I was not given a mix dorm in Generator. Again, and I can’t stress this enough, I usually stay in mix dorms, this was not a mix dorm… It was dudes dorm. The dorm was so dudes’ it violated my head - smell forward. The dorm was so dudes’ the socks in front of EVERY bed were saluting me at the entry. The dorm was so dudes’ the sound of unsticking sack from the thigh was an ambience music for most of the night. The dorm was so dudes’ there was no female toilet/bathroom/shower on the entire floor!! Information btw that would’ve come handy at checkin time if the receptionists didn’t take the vows of silence at the monks summit last summer. Whoever needs to catch a flight at 6:30am would appreciate how valuable any 10mins of running around in the maze of the entire floor while looking for a place to pee is valuable and knowing the floor is so dudes’ you need to literally take the stairs in aim to find one.
In a nutshell.. I was punished by being put in a male only room as an only girl in what they call ‘mixed dorm’. The staff is being punished by simply being there and needing to actually speak. The universe is being punished coz the window from our room was open and all that smell of socks and otherwise what I can only assume dump or mould was escaping to spread the sentence across (please invest in a proper ventilation system). So if it didn’t come clear yet, I don’t recommend Generator until...
