I recently dined in Monroes With my girlfriend for dinner, it was a quite busy Monday Evening and we arrived at around 8-8:30pm. We were greeted and sat quite quickly and we choose a high seat and ordered drinks which were quick and tasty. However, after ordering food, I got the fish and chips and herself got chicken wings and chips. There was an error with the printer in the kitchen so it was quite a wait for the food which was completely understandable as theese things happen. Upon receiving my food I noticed immediately that the chips looked like they had been sitting on the pass for about half an hour, not fresh at all. They were undercooked and cold (both our chips) so we sent them back. The wings were fine and in the end quite tasty, Our chips arrived back and so did my fish, I then started eating my meal and no word of a lie this was the worst food I have ever eaten in my life. The fish was without a doubt not fresh and tasted as if it was fried 2 hours prior to serving and just microwaved when served to me. I took Mabye 3-4 bites of the first piece of fish and didint touch it after. To make matters worse I then discovered majority of the chips on my plate and in the basket of chips my girlfriend got to be FROZEN. I don’t just mean cold but theese chips did not even see a drop of hot oil. This completely turned both of us off of our food. It was late into the evening about 9:40 or so when the polite waitress came over . I explained the situation and she apologised but did blame the broken printer for the reason my food was diabolical. I apreciate the apology but a broken printer simply does not justify the plate of food I was served. We gave food back, did not order anything else. She came back and offered a free tea or coffee and desert which she said was the recommended “apology” she got after speaking with her manager. Although it is a nice gesture we kindly declined . I seriously did not expect to pay the full €19.50 for the fish and chips. I have never not eaten my food in a restaraunt before so i may be wrong to presume that I should have got the fish and chips removed off the bill but I think it was the least they could do. I would not recommend the food here to anyone. I ended up paying my bill...
Read moreWas excited to go here after such highly rated reviews. The waitresses were very attentive and pleasant. However, unfortunately the food was a different matter. We ordered one portion of large mussels and one beef and Guinness Irish stew. Mussels - 50% were actually edible, the remainder very gelatinous and had to be chucked (certainly NOT the best mussels I have ever had, as people have stated here!). The stew - this was served unintentionally cold (the waitress had also acknowledged that she thought it didn't look hot when she brought it from the kitchen!); returned to kitchen to reheat and, again, served just as cold as the first time, just with a slightly warmer bowl. Returned and asked for a different meal, however was told the kitchen was closed (even though the chef came out and served a pizza to the table next to us 15 minutes later!). The stew was served for a third and final time, bowl - piping hot, stew - barely warm! Not quite sure how that happens. Irish stew was removed from the bill and waitress very apologetic and looked quite embarrassed - her customer service was very good.
Monroe's is a great venue for a drink and some live music, fun atmosphere. However, the most disappointing €30 spent on food. Very expensive for what is provided - stick...
Read moreLocated in Galways west end, Monroe's is never far from the action. Adorned in the traditional Irish Pub manner, you can expect wood floors, stained glass stories and a good old fashioned open fire. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and adhere closely to covid guidelines. Whenever I am in Galway I always swing by Monroe's. In my last visit I had the leek sausages, mash and onion gravy and my partner the ham, cabbage and mash . The portions as always are generous and homely. The leek sausages were flavourful and perfectly cooked, and the mash as much as one might expect. The onion gravy was delicious and piping hot as is my preferred choice, I'd only say cooking/ caramalising the onions a tiny bit longer would just elevate the dish. The ham and mash was spot on, and the parsley sauce deep and creamy. I'd previously tried the fish and chips, in my endless pursuit for the best in the land. The fish was crispy and huge, and the chips a country style of chunky, If only there were a home made tartar sauce ... My personal weakness! My partner had the Cajun burger which was as big as it was delicious, not a scrap was left. Monroe's is a great place, with great atmosphere, and certainly won't leave...
