Mashya is a fantastic place. When you arrive, you’re greeted with a beautiful stone facade welcoming smokers to leave the dining area free of ash trays and the like. Entering into the atrium, there is a sense of spaciousness, a luxury unattended to by Israel’s busy eateries. The place feels special and in some sub-conscious way, this makes the evening feel special. Israel bears a restaurant culture of its own, and here it’s customary for the staff to treat you as a friend. Sometimes this comes at the expense of actual service, but I prefer familiarity to stuffiness. Mashya’s team stands apart from the crowd. They manage to balance familiarity with a far more aloof quality in this scene: professionalism. Here, service coming from a “friend” with a side of a chaser doesn’t mean that you’re waiting fifteen minutes for someone to take an order. The food comes out at the right time, not while you’re eating your previous course and never after you’ve had to remind them of your order. Perhaps this standard is too low, but in a country which cherishes the absolutely mediocre “Shila” as fine dining, this standard feels appropriate. The food leaves little to be desired. The tasting menu is a true tasting, with at minimum 8 different bites, and a proper sequence of vegetables, raw fish, raw meat, bread, cooked fish, cooked meat, and sweets. Mashya takes the classic approach and mates it to a french-fusion menu that holds local sourcing in high regard. The dishes aren’t as adventurous as those in some of the country’s other leading restaurants (perhaps those by Yossi Shitrit or Avi Comforti), but they certainly match or surpass the creativity on display in the popular Machane Yehuda, the celebrity Jaffa Tel Aviv or the highly rated Animar. Where Mashya really shines is in the sauce. Beef tartares and sashimis are wonderfully fresh, but they could’ve remained nothing special, were it not for the phenomenal sauces. The execution matches the ambition and every dish is a success, a quality patrons long for in any restaurant run by the legendary comedian Eyal Shani. Overall, this is a superb spot for an upscale dinner, with a wonderful tasting of small plates that makes special occasions feel truly special. An easy 5/5.

I came here with two friends on a sunday evening without a reservation. They were able to seat us in the middle of the restaurants on one of the best tables for a limited amount of time. The interior struck us as beautiful with great attention to detail. As soon as we sat down our hostess and waitress for the evening came by to welcome us. She explained the concept of the restaurant and how we should go about ordering. We each chose a starter and main to share. We started off with a honey broiled pumpkin which was served with some sort of creme fraiche, an iceberg wedge topped with a pecan crumble and cheese sprinkled on top, and an israeli lamb dish. All were very unique on their own. But all of them equally outstanding and cooked to perfection. The dishes were beautifully arranged and presented. As we waited for our mains, we enjoyed the ambiance and music that went through the room. As mains we ordered a sea bass, spinach ravioli and fish cakes. Again beautifully presented. The skin of the sea bass was super crispy and the sauce that came with it light and silky in texture and incredible in taste. The ravioli came in a rich stew of seafood. All flavor palates were perfectly matched. The fish cakes were served with a light sauce with a slight hint of curry. All of the meals were rich but light at the same time and could be perfectly be enjoyed together. The service was always very attentive, super open and friendly and even offered us free drinks/shots given that we were young tourists and engaging with them. The restaurant is very chic and stylish without being pretentious, which can often be the case in restaurants in this price range. All in all a great experience.

In almost every food blog or city guide, Mashya is one of the recommendations. You can read about fantastic drinks and food and great service. All of this is true. I’d even say that it is my favorite place in Tel Aviv. Almost every dish was even better than the ones before and as I am quite picky when it comes to delicious food, this means highest honors. As many good restaurants, almost all dishes are made to be shared. So more to taste. We had the flatbread for starters which was served with two kind of dips. Very tasty and not as spicy as expected. Next was the brioche with cheddar and caviar: very good, rather savoury. As in-between, we decided for an more unusual dish: a mix between Sashimi and Ceviche of Albacore with Tigre de Leche and blueberries - and excellent dish. The fish skewer was very nice, I really liked the texture. The king mushroom tacos were „just good“, it’s just that I am not much into roasted mushrooms. The blue crab was extraordinary - I have rarely tasted something similar. The flank steak was good, the twist was the kimchi crumbs on top of it - irritating at first, but then you love it. Because it turns an average piece of meat into a really amazing experience. As dessert, we had the „air filled chocolate“ and the Tel Aviv version of „tres leches“. Both were good, but not „OMG“. But I really liked the pieces of chocolate, they provided with the espresso: dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate- each one with some spices on it. So far for the food - excellent. But also for the wine: trust the recommendations by the sommelier. All in all one of the most decent places I have been. My foodie heart is happy.

I'll start with the obvious: FOOD is amazing with special and interesting combinations We were a couple sitting at the bar for dinner. We started with the "opening dish" (one fore each) which was bite-size appetizers. It was very good but at the same time a bit too small perhaps to fully understand the flavors. Next was the tortellini which was SUPERB. I could only that for a week. Totally recommended. Then we had the calamari which was our least favorite. It was just ok, and the smoked lettuce (side dish) was better than the calamari. I can't recommended it After that we had the Ongle' (meat dish) which was also very good (although I expected it to be excellent). I felt like I could have a bit more so I had two beef Tartars which were great but very salty, for me at least. For dessert we had the "grain" ice cream (not sure that's the name, there was no Menu for desserts) which was interesting. We also had the chocolate "cloud" which was super special and tasty. Never seen or tasted such dessert. Recommended! SERVICE is also excellent, and I recommend sitting at the bar (for a couple/ 2 people) as it is feels more personal and more fun 😊 At the end of the night the bill came down to 630ILS (we also had 2 glasses of Shabli). Do note that the portions are relatively small and expensive, and I was going to rate the place with 4 stars because some dishes were not "Excellent" as I expected. But that wouldn't be fair. The overall experience WAS excellent and that's what counts 😉 Enjoy!

9.2.17 - Mashya was recommended by our hotel, CuCu Hotel, specifically Channah at reception. It was a fantastic dinner. Normally I give 5 stars to restaurants that are 3 Michelin and blow away all expectations, but there a few venues that deserve 5 stars because they are that good and Michelin stars are not necessary. We were greeted by reception and seated at the bar. Reservations are highly recommended. After talking with both bartenders and listening to their recommendations we ordered the Pumpkin Asado, Shrimp & Crab, Jerusalem mixed meats, and the oxtail. Our favorites were the pumpkin and shrimp. The mains were good, especially the offal, but the apps are spot on. We were stuffed, but the staff would not let us leave without dessert. We ordered the Baked Chocolate and they comped the Nectarine nut crumble. Both were balanced and very good. The Baked Chocolate was better. The restaurant wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our time in Israel and they accomplished their part. Thank you.

Very good fine dining restaurant. Really good, interesting and tasty food, both sea food and meat. Nicely presented and served. Good choice of wine. We had three different types of fish and sea food and one meat main course. There is also sharing tasting menu, but we did not for for it. Friendly and professional staff (when they really stated to pay attention to us). But! It seems they constantly overbooked. We stayed at the hotel above the restaurant for 4 days and every evening there were people waiting to be seated. We had to wait 45 minutes just to see some preparations and full set up took 1 hour. I believe if you book weeks in advance, you have to confirm again your booking a day prior to the visit and when you finally come to the restaurant you have reasons to believe you are shown your table straight away, not waiting without simple “sorry”. I doubt I am coming back again.
