After reading all the positive reviews about the restaurant, we were greatly disappointed by our meal. On a Tuesday in November, the restaurant was about 1/3 full. We ordered a shared starter of scrambled egg with truffle and a Florentine steak with Jacket potato and Roasted onion. The starter was a good sized portion of egg, but had absolutely no taste of truffle. We finished it, and mentioned to the waitress. She apologised and bright us another portion, which this time did taste of truffle - but there is only so much egg one can eat - we wanted to leave space for the expensive steak. During our starter, our side dishes appeared, which was unusual. After finishing our starter we discovered there had been a misunderstanding, and no steak had been ordered. Misunderstandings can happen, but the waitress left the potato and the onion on the table to get cold for 30 minutes whilst the steak was cooked, and there was no offer to replace them or to keep them warm. The steak when it arrived was a little disappointing, several large areas of gristle that was not edible. The meat without the gristle was very tender and flavoursome. The onion and potato were very cool by this time. During our meal there was a table of ladies adjacent with pasta and risotto dishes. One lady asked for some cheese (parmigiano) for her dish, a tiny cup (a small espresso cup) of grated cheese was produced. Five minutes later she had to ask for more cheese and had to ask for a bigger portion. The reaction of the ladies when the waitress turned away was not positive. Finally, my wife asked for a coffee which didn't arrive, so we asked for the bill and left. Mistakes can happen, but this was a disappointing...
Read moreI'll grant that the staff is very friendly and welcoming, but the food is below par for a good Italian restaurant. The pasta alla carbonara was problematic in a number of ways... The meat used was probably a prosciutto or maybe a very mild pancetta... It was definitely not guanciale. The meat was not finished into the dish but sprinkled on top, and the sauce was lacking in seasoning (surprising because several other items were very heavy on salt.) Proper carbonara should have some black pepper and the sauce is largely pecorino Romano (which is distinctly salty.) I suspect some cream was used instead, or perhaps a mild cheese.
The osso buco tortellini were nice, though the sauce leaned a bit sweet.
The mixed cuts of grilled pork were too salty and some of the cuts were quite tough. The contorni were quite large. The spinach was fresh but under seasoned, and the potatoes were small baked foil-wrapped with a bit of butter, which is an odd method for an...
Read moreFrom Piazza Commune on the way up to Rocca Maggiore is the Hotel and Ristorante La Fortezza. The hotel is just about the right size, with modern furnishing and strong wifi. Only downside was no coffee and tea service but lots of uoside like whatsapp access to hotel staff, generous buffet style bfast and friendly staff. Tried the onsite restaurant of the same name for dinner. Not disappointed with the lo spaghetonne carbonara and the le tagliatelle tiratelle al mattarello al ragu di cinghiale(wild boar ragu in white sauce with olives). Breakfast was also at the ristorante-buffet of local cheeses, salame, speck and prosciutto, pastries, pies and cake plus fresh fruit. Blood red orange juice and choice of hot beverages completed the...
