If you decide to scale the steep stairs up to the Citta Alta at Bergamo and work up an appetite, you can find yourself rewarded for your efforts at Assaje. Upon entering the restaurant we were quickly seated and received a taste of complementary prosecco and delightful fried dough appetizers. The menu had a great selection of pizzas. I wanted to order an amber beer; maybe it was out of stock, but the waiter began recommending a bottle of their amber house beer instead. As it was only half a euro more and half a litre instead of 40 cl I simply accepted. And thankfully so! It was absolutely great and a perfect fit for the meal. The pizzas arrived quickly after ordering and were fantastic. The crust was crispy, the crumb fluffy and the bottom and toppings baked to perfection. There is an open kitchen and deli meats are sliced on the spot, everything is superbly fresh. After the meal three bottles of cheerfully coloured liquid are presented on the table... Digestives in the form of limoncello, orange liqueur and a pistachio drink to choose from and finish the meal. Add to all of this excellent, friendly service and good prices, and it's a definite...

Assaje, pizzeria in stile napoletano situata in Città Alta a Bergamo, nei pressi della funicolare San Vigilio (Porta Sant'Alessandro). Possibilità di arrivare in auto. Vicino c'è un parcheggio. Il locale si trova ai piedi di una scalinata che porta direttamente alllo spazio esterno. Il locale in questione non accetta prenotazioni il sabato. Una volta arrivati sul posto, notiamo immediatamente una lunga coda per l'ingresso. Alla richiesta di informazioni sulla disponibilità di un tavolo ci viene risposto di lasciare il nostro nome che nel giro di 30 minuti saremmo stati chiamati da un responsabile che ci avrebbe accompagnato dentro. L'attesa totale è andata ben oltre i già citati 30 minuti, dilungandosi per una buona ora e mezza c.a. (naturalmente attendendo con rigore all'esterno, in una fredda serata ottobrina, il che ha generato un certo malumore tra la gente in attesa). Arrivato il nostro turno, entriamo. Lievemente provati dall'attesa, ma carichi di aspettative, ci fanno finalmente accomodare al tavolo dove veniamo subito omaggiati di un cestino di zeppoline fritte accompagnate da del prosecco, insieme al menù (in formato cartaceo un po' spartano). Dopo un'attesa di circa 10 minuti, finalmente possiamo ordinare! Attesa comprensibile, visto che il locale era colmo. Ordiniamo delle pizze, che arrivano in men che non si dica, tra lo stupore dei commensali. La pizza ha un bell'aspetto, anche il sapore non è male. A mio avviso però, l'impasto risulta pesante, così come gli ingredienti (comunque di ottima qualità), tant'è che nessuno riesce a finirla. Dopo la pizza, ci vengono offerte delle graditissime sfogliatelle, accompagnate da dei digestivi. Riassumendo: È coraggiosa la scelta di non accettare prenotazioni il sabato sera, scelta però assurda e mal gestita. Penso che non sia corretto nei confronti del cliente mentire sulle tempistiche relative alla disponibilità dei tavoli, creando un ammasso di clientela che è andato a congestionare l'intero sistema. Accettare le prenotazioni avrebbe certamente ottimizzato questo processo, riducendo il numero di clienti, ma rendendo questi ultimi certamente più sddisfatti. Resta il fatto che sono scelte che vanno prese dal manager del locale, le mie sono solamente opinioni. Giudico positiva (ma sotto le aspettative) l'esperienza che abbiamo vissuto una volta seduti al tavolo, il personale è stato cortese e abbastanza disponibile. Il conto è in linea con il servizio offerto. Penso torneremo, in tal modo, potremo verificare se la disavventura vissuta prima di entrare si riverificherà. Il locale presenta l'accesso per persone in carrozzina mediante ascensore. Non ci hanno chiesto di presentare il Green Pass per l'accesso al locale.

EDIT Ottobre 2022: Come promesso, siamo tornati e stavolta siamo rimasti piacevolmente stupiti. Ora accettano prenotazioni pure nel weekend, il che ha risolto il problema della volta scorsa. Il servizio è stato buono e veloce, fantastiche invece le pizze e gli omaggini offerti sia pre che post cena.

I don't understand why this place is so popular. Aranciatas were great, pizza was napolean-style but mediocre at best. Dough lacked taste and was way too burnt. You get much better napolean pizza from other side of old town.

The overall mood and service was far off from other italian pizzerias I've been to. It felt more like a McDonalds with constant rush and hustle going on and everybody had a sour look on their face (except for the few seconds they were serving you and forced a smile). The one I believe to have been the manager was the worst. Seemed really disinterested, didn't listen to our orders (for example I wanted special beer in bottle that I even showed him in the list, instead I got regular tap beer), was disrespectful towards...
