Tucked just a short walk from our hotel, Croce di Malta near Santa Maria Novella, My Bakery became our unexpected daily ritual during our summer stay in Florence. We first stumbled upon it on a morning wander with no destination in mind, just two Americans melting in the July heat, praying for something cold and caffeinated. If you’ve ever tried to find iced coffee in Italy, you know it’s a rare treasure. So when we saw that My Bakery offered shakerato and iced caramel coffee, we practically sprinted inside. I ordered the iced caramel, my go-to at home, and I wasn’t prepared for how next level it would be. It was the best iced caramel coffee I’ve ever had. A smaller portion than the supersized versions back home, sure, but oh my stars, it was pure perfection. The coffee itself was intensely aromatic and richly roasted, with a silky caramel sweetness and creamy texture, all chilled over ice. I was hooked. I came back every morning just for this drink. The baked goods? Equally divine. Each day, I tried something new: a cornetto filled with pistachio cream, one with chocolate, and my wife adored hers filled with custard and topped with a sugary crust. We ogled the mini pizzettes every time and promised ourselves we’d try them next trip. Their case was full of savory sandwiches, pastries, and other delights that would make anyone stop in their tracks. If you’re near Santa Maria Novella and craving something refreshing and delicious, don’t miss this gem. It’s a cozy little spot with huge flavor, and for us, it became a small daily joy in the heart of Florence.

Scam. Typical Italian strategy of not showing the prices. Only a few products have prices indicated (the cheapest ones). Tiramisu and spinach pie for example didn’t have price indicated. I asked the staff. She was not knowing the price so she had to ask at the rest of the staff who were also puzzled. They asked the manager to finally tell me it was 5,5€ each. I took both. The owner is in charge of the cashier, she charged me 6,5€ for the tiramisu. When I told her she made a mistake she got upset and she was more interested of knowing which member of the staff made of mistake than apologizing to me. She gave me back 1€. But after 5min I could still see the owner very upset and mad at the staff who had told me a wrong price so I went to talk to them. I told the owner that if this is such a big deal for her I can give her back 1€ but they should just indicate the price of the products instead of doing all this sneaky strategy to scam tourists (because this is what it is). They expect people to order without knowing how much they will be charged eventually. Anyone who spent 2 days in Italy knows that this is their technic to overcharge tourists. The owner answered me it was not a big deal but definitely took back the 1€. The last proof that for the owner only money counts. She definitely doesn’t care about welcoming people, being polite and offering a nice moment...
