This was our first restaurant in Florence and our worst restaurant experience in Italy, during our 9 day stay there. If I could give it negative stars I would. We went there with our 1 yr old, the food was good but our waiter was rude and unprofessional. If you see a young blonde guy as a waiter there, do whatever you can to avoid being served by him. He was impatient with an arrogant attitude during our entire dining experience. We felt rushed and pressure to order asap. He was getting annoyed that we didn’t put in our order during the first two times he stopped by because we were trying to get settled down with our baby. After the food arrived, he did not stop by to see if we needed anything else and we were trying extra hard to get his attention. This was likely because he was too preoccupied serving his girlfriend over at the next table at the same time, spending a ton of time at her table. He either wasn’t noticing us trying flag him down or just ignoring us - not sure which is worse but we eventually ended up flagging another waiter. But that wasn’t even the worst part.
When we asked for the bill, we saw we were charged for a service charge for 3 people. Service charges are pretty common in places like Italy and everywhere we’ve been, we’ve been getting charged for a service charge for 2 people. But to charge us for 3 and count our 1 yr old as one person to charge for was ridiculous. When I was going through the bill at the end, I asked our waiter why the service charge was for 3 - if was actually for our 1 yr old baby that didn’t eat or if it was a mistake - he had the audacity to say that it was indeed a charge for 3 and argued that the baby counted as a full person. I couldn’t believe it and the second I questioned it he got extremely uncomfortable, defensive and aggressive. I’m not sure if he tried to attempt this thinking we were tipsy tourists after a bottle of wine but when he saw we weren’t getting fooled, he tried to give me back cash for the extra that he charged us. It’s not at all about the few extra euros but about the treatment, when you go somewhere expecting good food and good service, and an appreciation for your business, especially as a tourist and a visitor.
When I wanted to speak to someone else that worked there, perhaps a manager or another waiter, I could see our waiter getting even more uncomfortable, nervous and aggressive. When a couple of the waiters at the bar noticed the tense interaction and came over, I asked one of them about the cover charge and he explained that cover charges in Italy are standard. I said “of course I understand”. Then when I asked how many people should have been charged for at my table, he said 2. When I showed him that I was charged for 3, including the baby, he went quiet and you could tell that he was embarrassed for our young waiter who got caught trying to take advantage of a young tourist couple with a baby. The other waiter that came by said “oh but he gave the charge for 1 back, it must have been a computer error”. It was absurd, and you could tell they were all scrambling to cover for the rude waiter that would do such a petty, embarrassing thing. It’s a shame because the rest of the staff were pretty friendly and nice during our dinner and the atmosphere was great (outside of our waiter). But since we had this experience here, I wonder how many times this guy did this to customers and got away without anyone noticing.
Long story short, if you’re considering going here because of the food, I recommend think twice. If you’re in Florence, Italy, chances are you are around tons and tons of other restaurants with amazing food and atmosphere. You can probably find one without a mean waiter acting like he’s doing you a favor by serving you and trying to steal a few extra euros from you on top of that. Out of all the restaurants we’ve been to in Italy, this was the most (and only) disappointing place with a negative experience for us so that should tell...
Read moreTonight's meal was very unpleasant and I have a reasonable suspicion that one of the female waiters at this restaurant discriminates against Asian customers with strong discriminatory undertones. After I made a reservation in advance, I received an email back from the restaurant saying that the reservation had failed.I called the number and asked in English if I could still make a reservation for today's dinner, a female waitress answered and said a couple of greetings in Italian and then didn't hang up or respond to my request, there was a lot of noise coming from the restaurant on the phone and I kept asking if I could be heard but no one was there to hear what I was saying, so I had to hang up; after dialling out the number a second time a male waitressI answered my call and was told that the two of you couldn't make a reservation, so I could come directly to the restaurant. After arriving at the shop because there is no internet in the shop, as a foreign tourist part of the menu I have no way to quickly understand, so I entered the restaurant in advance when ordering good screenshot before I want to order food pictures to show to the female waitress, but after I showed her two dishes we want to order, she suddenly rolled her eyes and said a thank you after a quick departure, and even I have not yet even said the drink, she did not ask.She didn't even ask. And a few minutes after she left, she rudely came back to our table and took the menu out of my hand, under my elbow to be exact. I've been travelling to Italy for almost a week now and I've been to a lot of cities, Italy is a beautiful and welcoming city and this dinner in Florence left my boyfriend and I feeling very surprised and uncomfortable, I can't give this restaurant a high enough rating no matter how good...
Read moreThis is the worst and most expensive place I have ever eaten in Europe so far!
We took our host’s recommendation for granted and spent our first evening in Florence at Marione. The place is quite central, at short distance from any attraction; the interiors very rustic, not by design though as most of the furniture seemed chosen and placed just to make the best out of every single inch.
We ordered a florentine steak (a porterhouse cut between the sirloin and the tenderloin), potatoes and just two cokes (due to the poor choice of wine); the waitress seemed already annoyed by the crowd even though they had just opened. After 20 minutes, she brought us some bread - cold, unsalted, dry bread - and after 15 more minutes she showed up with some baked potatoes and their famous steak.
We really had high expectations, we couldn’t believe we finally had the pleasure to enjoy one of the most famous dishes in Tuscany. Unfortunately, our dream died the minute we tested the steak! It was burned at the top and bottom, and cold and dry in the middle. It tested like it had already been cooked and left in the fridge, and quickly reheated before the service.
The meat was not tender, had not flavour neither softness, and not at all marbled as you would expect; I don’t believe the cattle had the characteristics of a Scottona. We left most of it on the plate and when we gave our feedback to the waitress, she simply replied with: “this is how we cook it”.
They had the courage to charge us €75 for the streak and even €4 for each coke; with a total of €92.20!
There’s so much tourism in the centre of Florence that they obviously don’t give a damn about the quality of their food and service but still charge as if they were a fine cuisine restaurant.
I would not...
