Osteria Pico — Restaurant in Matera

CIGARETTE BUTT FOUND IN MY PASTA DISH!!! Do not go! I went last night to Osteria Pico. I was excited to go. Let me make it clear that I am in the restaurant industry, I know it’s tough. Therefore I only write reviews when I find things exceptional or in this case, really bad!! I’m sick today as I write this review. My girl and I ordered the house appetizer for 2 and it was really good charcuterie products of the area. I was excited for the main course. My girlfriend ordered the orecchiette with rabe and toasted breadcrumbs. The dish was dry and lacking flavor. I ordered the pasta with pistachio pesto and mushroom. It was a good dish until I found myself chewing on a CIGARETTE BUTT!!! I was sick to my stomach and disgusted. I called the waiter right away who looked embarrassed and shocked and didn’t know what to do. So he offered me a coffee as if it would make the situation better! We asked for the bill immediately to get out of this place. The waiter didn’t even remove the dish from our tab!! My girl immediately went to the manager who had no clue this even happened and when he was made aware, didn’t even care. He shrugged his shoulders. I told them that in no professional kitchen should smoking be allowed!! It’s a healt and sanitary issue! Worse was the attitude and lack of response of the whole staff. It was shocking!! Would never go back. I think about all the pasta dishes that were served with the same sauce that I had ordered. I’m still so sick to my stomach. DO NOT GO! So many other great places you can choose from in Matera with better service, better manager and most importantly,...

Mi aggiravo già da qualche giorno a Matera desideroso di provare l'esperienza della cucina tipica di questi luoghi, avendo già in mente quello che avrei voluto provare ma nella totale incertezza di chi (e quando) avrebbe potuto esaudire questa voglia.

Non era la prima volta che visitavo Matera e devo ammettere che, nel dubbio, sono dapprima andato sul sicuro nel famoso ristorante che ha vinto la famosa puntata dei quattro ristoranti al cospetto dell'altrettanto famoso chef mio concittadino e nel quale ero già stato a cena durante la mia precedente e fugace visita.

Questa volta, però, avevo più tempo e volevo cercare anche qualcosa di nuovo nel bel mezzo dei Sassi. Ammetto di essermi imbattuto in questa osteria casualmente, guidato -banalmente e semplicemente- da una buona recensione che avevo letto sulla mia guida in cui si elogiava la qualità delle materie prime, la tipicità del menu e, cosa che non guasta mai, l'abbondanza delle portate unitamente al giusto prezzo.

Alla prova dei fatti mi sento di confermare tutto. Sono arrivato piuttosto tardi per pranzare all'osteria Pico, stremato da un'escursione mattutina sulla gravina che si è rivelata più ostica di quanto sottovalutato sia dalla guida che dalle informazioni raccolte in città. Nonostante l'ora un po' tarda, il personale è stato subito disponibile ad offrire un tavolo quando tutti gli avventori erano ormai prossimi al caffè ed al conto.

Una volta entrati nel locale da un ingresso a mo' di grotta, già tipico di per sè, è facile constatare che la definizione di "osteria" che il locale si autoattribuisce è forse un po' riduttiva. Il luogo, pur nella sua veracità, appare curato e si potrebbe dire persino raffinato in alcuni dettagli. Ad ogni modo, senza nulla togliere alla bella struttura, il meglio viene giustamente offerto proprio dalla cucina.

A mio avviso il piatto forte di questo ristorante è l'antipasto a base di prodotti materani: si compone di tanti assaggini, sia freddi che caldi, ben proporzionati per un assaggio che dà soddisfazione anche allo stomaco oltre che alle papille gustative e -per altro- contento di essere stato esaudito nella mia richiesta di poter degustare i lampascioni, ovvero delle cipolline selvatiche dal sapore pungente ed inconfondibile ma che, a quanto pare e spiacevolmente, a Matera non è tanto facile vedersi proposti all'interno dei menu. All'osteria da Pico invece questo prodotto viene proposto e valorizzato anche nella carta dei secondi e di questo gli va dato merito.

Dopo il bel giro di antipasti è probabile che ci sia posto solo per il primo o per il secondo, il che crea qualche ansia nell'avventore perché impone una scelta ardua al cospetto di tutte le leccornie che vengono proposte. Siccome io a pranzo sono più incline al carboidrato ho dovuto rassegnarmi con dolore al proposito di provare le loro proposte di carne alla prossima visita. La pasta comunque era ottima ed, anche in questo caso, offerta nelle tante varianti di forme e gusto offerte dal territorio.

In conclusione, per me questo locale è l'ideale per concedersi l'esperienza di una tipica cucina materana, o lucana che dir si voglia, quando ci si trovi affamati ed assetati nel bel mezzo delle faticose ed assolate peregrinazioni nei Sassi. Anche il vino, un aglianico rosso preso al calice, l'ho trovato molto buono. Il conto si è rivelato del tutto onesto in relazione alla qualità ed alla quantità di quanto messo a tavola. Portuguese: Estive no restaurante no sábado, dia 24 de maio de 2025, e infelizmente minha experiência foi marcada por um atendimento decepcionante. Entendo que um restaurante precisa oferecer mais do que apenas boa comida — o serviço também é essencial. Ao chegar, fui informada de que todas as mesas estavam reservadas, restando apenas uma na área externa. Aceitei prontamente, feliz por conseguir um lugar, mesmo com o frio. Perguntei se, caso alguma mesa interna vagasse, eu poderia me mover para dentro. A resposta foi que todas estavam reservadas. Até aí, compreensível. No entanto, durante o jantar, percebi pelo menos dois casais sendo acomodados sem reserva, o que contradiz o que me foi informado. Além disso, após o outro grupo da área externa sair, a mesa ao lado passou a ser usada por funcionários para fumar. Como não fumo, isso me incomodou um pouco, mas entendi que se tratava de uma área aberta. O que realmente me levou a escrever este comentário foi o que ocorreu no final da noite. Ao ir ao banheiro, notei diversas mesas vagas no salão interno e, mais uma vez, perguntei se poderia mudar de lugar para terminar meu jantar com mais conforto. A resposta foi novamente negativa. Desta vez, mencionei ao funcionário que havia visto pessoas entrarem após mim, sem reserva, e ainda assim conseguirem mesas internas. Mesmo assim, ele negou meu pedido sem oferecer qualquer explicação. Isso me deixou com a nítida sensação de descaso e falta de consideração, apesar de eu já estar consumindo no local como cliente. Resumindo: a comida é boa, mas o atendimento deixa muito a desejar. Não pretendo voltar. Faltou clareza, consideração e coerência por parte da equipe.

I visited the restaurant on Saturday, May 24, 2025, and unfortunately, my experience was marked by disappointing service. I believe a restaurant must offer more than just good food — service is equally important. When I arrived, I was informed that all tables were reserved, with only one available in the outdoor area. I accepted it happily, grateful to have a table, even though it was cold. I asked if I could move inside later, should a table become available, and was told that everything was reserved. That was understandable. However, during dinner, I noticed at least two couples being seated inside without a reservation, which contradicted what I had been told. Later, after the other group outside had left, their table was used by staff members to smoke. Since I don’t smoke, it bothered me a little, but I understood it was an open area. What really prompted me to write this review happened at the end of the night. While going to the restroom, I noticed several empty tables inside and asked again if I could move indoors to finish my meal more comfortably. The answer was once again no. I pointed out to the staff that I had seen people enter after me without a reservation and still get seated inside, but my request was still denied — without any explanation. This left me with a clear sense of disregard and lack of consideration, even though I was already a paying customer. In summary: the food was good, but the service was seriously lacking.
