I found Dal Milanese on Open Table and then verified the reviews on Google. I was looking for a quality and sit-down place for a meal in Milan that was open after 11 PM.
I had eaten at a different restaurant an hour earlier, and since portions are wonderfully and appropriately small in Italy, my strategy was try as many different foods as possible at as many restaurants. I also wanted to find a place that specialized in Milanese risotto since I hadn't tried it yet, and I love risotto.
The location is far away from most tourist attractions, which you may like or not. Some prefer to be seated outside, in the middle of things to people watch. This is not a place to people watch. It's located in a quiet neighborhood. The mosquitos and other biting insects are pretty common right now in Italy also, there has been so much rain. So be ready for them for your Italian Summer, even inside the restaurants!
I love the way the place is decorated, with photos, great lighting, wine, it's just a nice looking place when you walk in.
Dal Milanese has a nice wine list, but then all the restaurants seem to have this in Italy, no matter where you eat. The service was painfully slow, but there was only one person serving, so I let it slide. They at least offered bread and olive oil during the wait.
Dal Milanese serves traditional risotto, and I was so glad to finally try it. The rice was prepared perfectly, and was the perfect texture. If you love saffron, you'll love their risotto.
This place is great for a late night meal...
Read moreI am an Italian who was born and raised in Italy. Although I must admit I'm not an exceptional cook, I have a passion for cooking. Additionally, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe.
When I discovered that Dal Milanese had opened in LA, I couldn't contain my excitement. With 20 years of experience working in restaurants, starting from the age of 16, I have tried many establishments in LA, occasionally being impressed.
Most restaurants these days strive to be modern, creative, and innovative, and there's nothing wrong with that—I understand it. However, Dal Milanese struck a different chord with me. It transported me back to the Italy we all know—the traditions, customs, and the comforting taste of authentic Italian cuisine that has been passed down through generations and resides fondly in my memories.
My heart was warmed, my taste buds were delighted, and I couldn't help but smile brightly as if my mother were cooking for me.
I am eagerly looking forward to returning, whenever I feel homesick or simply in need of a genuine smile from the manager Giancarlo, the hostess Emanuela, or the owner Saverio.
Dal Milanese never fails to energize me, disappoint me, or make me feel any less at home.
If you have experienced Italy firsthand and value how your money is well spent, then this place is a treat for you. But if you're seeking the hype and glitz of Hollywood or just looking for an Instagrammable experience, I suggest you spend your money elsewhere.
Grazie mille! I will...
Read moreWe wanted this new neighborhood spot to be wonderful. It was not. Our table for 2 was so close a table for 8 that diners and staff bummed into me constantly. Nightmare. The server was inexperienced. We ordered 4 dishes to share. The salad and two appetizers arrived at once and did not fit on our tiny table for 2, especially with water, wine, bread and tableware. Making matters worse, the main course arrived before were were finished, so they just took our first courses and replaced them. Seriously?? The quality of the food was underwhelming. The scallops had zero taste. The fennel orange and olive salad was just that, 3 ingredients arranged on a plate. I could have done this at home with the same canned ingredients. The osobucco was well cooked. However the cook (I can’t say chef) used a thickening agent on the sauce that made it gummy and unpleasant. Finally, the chocolate cake had globs of unmelted chocolate instead of a warm consistent center. Go to Blair’s in Silver Lake or Brera in DTLA for excellent Italian food, service and experience. Skip this place until they get it together if they...
