Milan | Wakaba - A Cozy Japanese Izakaya Gem 🏮✨

A super traditional Japanese restaurant in the city centre, this place captures the atmosphere of a popular Japanese trattoria. The menu offers a wide range of options, from appetizers to warm dishes and sushi, though it can be a bit overwhelming. Despite this, the quality of the dishes is very high, and the traditional flavors shine through. The sushi is superior to the city’s average, and the prices are very reasonable. The drink menu is also noteworthy, featuring an original selection of Japanese beverages, from sake to liquors. Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Truly a hidden gem in Milan. An authentic Japanese izakaya with extensive menu. Here you can find traditional dishes that aren’t widely available at typical sushi place in Milan. I was surprised that this place is not as expensive as other authentic Japanese restaurants. Food tastes really good, sushi rice were well seasoned, and the fish were good quality (except the uni that was def frozen). Service was friendly but the food took a long time to serve especially the sushi set.

My partner and I have been to many Japanese restaurants, and the Izakaya entrance and look of the place attracted us as it looksd like an authentic Japanese restaurant... And it does, only though of the lowest quality and service level: we tried the sushi and it was served old (the tuna did not look fresh, and the texture of the sashimi was thick and rubbery in the mouth, probably because it was not properly cut and served a few hours after having been prepared), we also tried the octopus meatballs, which in fair were ok, although lacking in octopus content... Finally we ordered the gyoza, which never arrived. Service was really sub-standard, as no one seemed to be in charge of our orders (even after we asked to pay as by then we had waited 30 minutes for the gyozas). Finally, after booking over the phone to avoid issues, we were given the table next to the main entrance, while all other tables were free, and notwithstanding our request to move somewhere less "breezy". Do not give this...
