We first dined at La Grotte del Funaro in 2022 on our first visit to Orvieto and it was one of the best meals of our trip.
This time, when we decided to return to Orvieto, we had to go back and eat our final meal of the trip at this exquisite restaurant once again.
We made a reservation a few weeks prior to our trip and were happy that they seated us as we requested on the outdoor patio with a lovely view of the sunset.
The servers, despite making an effort, were a little hesitant and also forgot to bring us our wine until we reminded them after our antipasto was served.
We started with the zucchini carpaccio (delicious) and the panzanella (equally tasty). It was the perfect start to what ended up an exquisite meal.
The tagliatelle with wild boar ragu was absolutely spectacular as was the pappardelle with pesto and bufala. Equally delicious was the Raviolo with white ragu. Portions were generous and the quality of the food truly stellar.
We also enjoyed a visit by the neighbourhood cat, who was fluffy and friendly while we enjoyed an excellent dining experience. Truly the perfect way to end our...
Read moreFood is good, location is awesome. Its all about dining in a cave, so obviously don't stay on the terrasse. They have local dishes and an awesome guy making the pastas in the middle of the restaurant.
I would strongly recommend that you take something pasta-based. My grilled boar was ok, and the pizza was very average. However, the pastas were excellent.
If you are a local, you may get some smiles and good manners from the staff. Except for a lady there, that actually looked like the owner, the male staff were very cold, at the limit big being rude. For example, the door of the restaurant was open, and the time was good, so a few clients including us started to enter the restaurant. We were all told to get out, as they needed more time. We actually entered half an hour after the expected opening time.
Also, be aware that they don't really care if you have allergies. They will just tell you that everything is fine and serve you the allergen. Don't ask me how...
Read moreIt is unlikely that you will ever again dine in such a place. Unless, of course, you return to this one as you will be very much tempted to do. This is a really good restaurant housed in a great excavation into the soft stone mesa that houses the ancient city of Orvieto. A large man-made cavern that once provided the distances needed for making rope. This is a complex and mysterious underground space that has a very few tables near windows in the high cliff that look out on the surrounding countryside from dizzying elevation.
Note that all of this is just by the way. No extra charge. This is a restaurant that takes itself very seriously. The kitchen, the staff, and the wine list would make a fussy critic very happy if were housed in a tire warehouse in Van Nuys. And the prices are reasonable.
This restaurant would be a complete marvel if it did not directly compete with a collection of other fine restaurants in this marvellous,...
