La Berninetta — Restaurant in Rome

Very friendly waitstaff, amazing food and wine, and the atmosphere was relaxing. During our trip to Rome, we've been two times - and were treated to a phenomenal experience both times. I got the Oxtail Meatballs and the Eggplant Parmesan on my two visits. Both dishes were daily specials, and both were delicious.

I read somewhere that you should eat off the beaten path, go where the locals go, and don't be afraid to try new things. La Berninetta is an amazing example of this. Located outside of the traditional "touristy" circles, this gem is hard to find, but once found, it's hard to match. This restaurant left us with mixed feelings. The service was great. The staff are very welcoming and courteous. And two out of three dishes that we ordered were also very good: spaghetti caccio e pepe and pizza buffala e crudo. The third dish, spaghetti carbonara, however, was inedible. There must have been some terrible mix-up in the kitchen, because it seemed to contain only three ingredients: spaghetti, bacon and amounts of salt so enormous that they verged on the poisonous. We ate here mid-week in July 2023. Option for a fully translated English menu online, however, the paper English menu did not list all the dishes. Friendly staff. Couldn’t see Aperol spritz on the menu but staff happy to make me one. Starters (bruschetta and arancini) were really tasty, good gelato and sorbet too (some language barrier when ordering desserts, but this was mostly our fault as British not making an effort to learn so much Italian!). Pizza was clearly freshly made and stone baked, nothing particularly fancy but I suspect this is the true Italian style, so was worth trying when in Rome! All reasonably priced...
