Dining at Malaterra was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in Rome. We arrived and asked for a table for two. The waitress pointed at the bar stools and told us to sit there. Moments later, people who arrived after us were told to wait five minutes and were then given proper tables. If all tables were supposedly reserved, how were others seated before us? The double standards were blatant and completely unacceptable.
After finishing our food, we spent an absurd amount of time trying to get someone’s attention for the bill. Staff members walked by and actively avoided eye contact. When I finally managed to stop a waiter and ask, the waitress returned and literally threw the bill on the table before walking away without a word. I was about to say I’d pay by card, but she was already gone. Ten minutes later I had to stop another waiter and ask again for the card machine. He brought it, processed the payment in silence, handed me nothing, and left without saying thank you or goodnight.
And to top it all off, they charged a service fee for this abysmal treatment. Being ignored, disrespected and treated like an inconvenience is not service. It is an insult.
There are countless wonderful restaurants in Rome where you are treated with kindness and professionalism. Malaterra is not one of them. Never again.
IMPORTANT EDIT: Interestingly, on the very same day, several similar reviews appeared, all saying how great the waiters and waitresses were. It’s hard to believe that’s just a coincidence. I’ll let others draw their own...
Read moreI don’t recommend this place at all. We ordered one pizza, but the waitwr didn’t understand english and got us two pizzas, so we tried to explain him our problem but then he got upset about not understanding us. Like cmon its 2025 and ur a waiter in Rome… The pizza tasted fine, but I’m sure you’ll find a better one in Rome:) Anyways awe managed to solve this, after paying I noticed they charged us 3 euros for coperto, which is ILLEGAL in Rome lol. They really be foolin tourists:) Whatch out yall, avoid this place. I personally didn’t like the design and all nice, like its just a messy collage of italian...
