We had reservations at 12:30 and on time. From the get go- the waiter was rude. He sat us in the back in an empty long room. Not the main room like they had before. They expanded. I had no problem with that, but what I had a problem with was the lack of civility towards us. We did nothing wrong and were pleasant. He immediately asked us what we wanted after sitting for 2 minutes. I was not ready . He came back in maybe 4 minutes ready to take our order. I was going to order the appetizers. He said “no, it is better you order everything now. I won’t have time to come back and check on you.” I said ok- we ordered the primi and I was about to order the segundi but he snatched, yes, snatched the menus and said, “that’s enough. If you want more later you can get.” He walked away and slammed the menus down making a loud slap which echoed throughout the restaurant. I was baffled. The appetizers came quickly and were good. Standard Italian fare. After a bit, the primi came. We were full but the busboy asked if we wanted desert and suggested the tiramisu. We said ok. It was the nicest interaction we had had. It never came after waiting 15 min. I told the busboy we had to go and he said “perfect.” We left paid the bill and that was that. Now I do not expect my arse to be kissed, but a little kindness after walking 1 hr from the city center to try a restaurant Anthony Bourdain suggested. Maybe a smile? A taking of the menu rather than snatching? It was obvious this was not a welcoming spot for tourists and I write this as a warning to other tourists, if you go, you might feel bad after coming here. I hope not, but we sure did- and for what? Standard...
Read moreNot a tourist friendly place. Our whole family has traveled from multiple countries to meet in Rome and this was supposed to be the ‘official’ dinner celebrating our reunion (eight people total). Osteria dal 1931 was highly recommended by the front desk at the hotel where we were staying. Moreover, they called and made reservations for us, gave us the name of the manager that we were supposed to ask for, and assured us that we will have a waiter that spoke English. We were given a table in their lower level room. We never saw the manager and the waiters that stopped by our table initially, were visibly not pleased that we didn't speak Italian. After a long wait, when a waiter that spoke English came, we were rushed to order the food. During the dinner, our attempts to get their attention were in ignored completely. The waiters walked by our table many times when serving the other tables, and every time we called out to them, they either pretended not to hear us, or we were told that they will be right with us, but never came. In the same time, they were talking and laughing with the people at the other tables and didn’t seem to be in any hurry. The only difference that we could see is that all the others were locals (or at least Italians) and we were tourists. I wanted to order more food and drinks but I gave up eventually. Even to pay the bill we had to wait probably 15 minutes and we had to request it a few times. The food was good, but nothing special about it. Weird thing: the toilet was facing the sink with not enough room between them to properly use either (see the picture). I would NOT recommend this place if you...
Read moreWe went there because it was the only open restaurant nearby. The food was quite nice and simple, as Roman cuisine should be. I would say that the food deserved 3 stars out of 5 but the slowness of the service forces me to give only 2 stars as overall rating. We waited for an hour only to get the main course and we spent a total time of 2 hours in the restaurant. There was a group of tourists and we ended up forgotten by the waitresses. After roughly half an hour waiting for our dishes (that we had already ordered) they asked what we were waiting for. My friend got ballistic! In some way the discussion he had with the staff sped up the whole process (always remember that in Rome politeness does not help in these situations). The boss came out to apologise and offered a couple of amaro for free. We really appreciated this gesture but it is not enough to justify such a poor service. The bill was right (saltimbocca, straccetti, acqua, mezzo litro di vino, fried artichokes and chicory); 44€. Bear in mind that we did not pay...
