We visited Osteria Faruso as a group of four, eager to experience authentic Italian cuisine in what appeared to be a charming setting. Unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant, primarily due to the poor service and underwhelming food quality.
Upon placing our order, the waiter chose not to write it down. Consequently, we received only two out of the three appetizers we had ordered (Fillet beef carpaccio, Buffalo mozzarella, and raw ham), with the Zucchini flower completely missing. When we pointed this out, a different waiter rudely insisted that we had only ordered two appetizers and that it was not their mistake. While the appetizers were acceptable, they were far from memorable.
Following our starters, a waitress sternly instructed us to keep our cutlery if we had another course coming. While we understand that coperto is a common charge in Italy, being denied fresh cutlery felt really unprofessional (someone would say scam).
For the main course, we ordered the following dishes:
Fettuccine with basil and pistachio pesto with stracciatella and tomato confit (x2) – The description sounded far better than the actual dish. Both portions were completely bland and lacked any depth of flavor.
Ricotta and spinach ravioli with butter, sage, and Chianti reduction – Another disappointment. The dish was not only flavorless but also undercooked. While we appreciate that Italian pasta is typically firm, this was well beyond.
Strozzapreti all’Amatriciana with tomato sauce and bacon – This was the best dish of the evening, although the competition was not exactly fierce. It was flavorful and well-prepared.
After finishing our main courses, we waited an unreasonably long time for the staff to clear our plates. The table next to us, which finished about five minutes after we did, had their dishes cleared before ours. The long wait continued when it was time to request the bill. Throughout our visit, the service was unfriendly and, at times, borderline rude. The only time we received a smile was when the waiter delivered the bill and made a point to emphasize that service was not included in the final price.
While Osteria Faruso boasts a lovely ambiance that sets high expectations, the reality falls far short. The service was appalling, the food was, at best, average, and the entire experience left us feeling as though we had fallen into a tourist trap. A real shame, as it put a damper on an otherwise perfect...
