I'm torn.... This is such a major tourist site and with good reason. It's something to behold with your own eyes. It's on the list of "must see" items for tons of folks around the world. That said, I went to visit the interior back in 2018 and mostly I just remember feeling like herded cattle. But then I went back in 2023 with my husband, who hadn't visited Rome before, and it was on his list to tour. So we did. And I'll never ever do it again! I've been to Rome a couple dozen times. I've traveled to a lot of really busy cities in countries all over the world as a flight attendant. I'm no stranger to crowds. But REALLY!? Some crowd control needs to be happening here. Warning: if you have any sort of stress disorder, PTSD, anxiety, claustrophobia, etc... I strongly encourage you to consider this a bit before committing. Once you're in that "herd" I don't know of any quick way out if you have a panic attack. And it's very triggering for some people. Full of visual stimulation, noise that bounces off of all that marble, people bumping into you and bodies moving in all directions might set you off. My anxiety was super duper high and I was ready to run out the door by the end of it. It's overload. Too much to see and too many confusing directions. And the ushers literally keep you moving... "do not stop moving; Keep walking forward." They SAY this! Herding cattle is the same. But I think actual cattle would be more organized! Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended but it's so convoluted. Meeting areas for groups are in multiple locations and that's so confusing. We were told "upstairs" but there's more than one "upstairs" level that indicates groups meet there. If you purchase from a group, you'll want to proceed to the reception counter upon entering and exchange the ticket the group gives you for an actual ticket that'll work inside the Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel. You go from one line to another line and another line and then you feel like you're in a line for two hours more... until you leave, looking haggard and feeling spent. Glad I did it. Won't go again. No matter who asks me.
