La Soffitta Renovatio is a delightful restaurant and a godsend for anyone traveling to Rome with severe food allergies. I personally am allergic to dairy, nuts, and eggs, and we came here because of other good reviews speaking to their competent accommodations of food allergies; they were not wrong.
We spoke with the Chef, Muhammad, who was our server for our first visit, and he was able to offer confident assurances that the food I ordered would be prepared safe for my allergies. Furthermore, Muhammad was a delightful host, and made our visits to La Soffitta Renovatio all the more enjoyable. You would be most lucky to have the pleasure of meeting him when you come here.
It is worth noting that though someone in our group speaks very good Italian and was able to assist with ordering, you do not need to speak Italian to safely dine with food allergies here. The chef and the rest of the staff we interacted with speak English very well, and will be able to communicate with you effectively to ensure your meal is safe.
We were also surprised to see that the restaurant had a large number of options to accommodate gluten-free diets for those who suffer from celiac or gluten allergies, and even vegan options! With someone vegan in our group, this was greatly appreciated.
On top of all this, the food was amazing. On our first visit, we enjoyed pizza marinara as a table, and I ordered the grilled salmon and potatoes as well as the spaghetti with clams, all expertly cooked and delicious. The following visit we again enjoyed their pizza and I loved their seared tuna. I was so eager to eat that I forgot to photograph some of the food, but trust me when I say it all looked as good as it tasted.
Overall, we loved our visits to La Soffitta Renovatio, and I would strongly recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a place to eat near the Vatican or Castle St. Angelo, especially if you're looking for a place to accommodate your severe food allergies or other dietary restrictions.
Thank you again, Muhammad! A safe and delicious meal at a restaurant is so hard to come by for someone with allergies like me....

This family-owned establishment has been delighting diners for generations, with its current location tracing its roots back to 1960 when it was taken over by the second generation of restaurateurs.
Stepping into La Soffitta Renovatio is like stepping back in time to the heart of Italy, with every dish exuding the authentic flavors of Italian cuisine. One of the standout favorites at La Soffitta Renovatio is the cacio e pepe, a classic Roman pasta dish that never fails to impress with its simplicity and depth of flavor. And let's not forget the oven-baked pizzas, which elicited exclamations of delight with every bite.

Read moreI will be chasing this dragon for the rest of my life. La Soffitta was around the corner from our AirBnB, and I had also done a lot of research to find that they 1) deeply cared about allergies and 2) could do incredible gluten free dishes. My husband and I both got dishes off the Chef's Menu and a bottle of wine. I got a GF lobster pasta and he ordered a lamb dish. While mine was extraordinary – handmade pasta, fresh seafood, a sauce to DIE FOR – his was only fine, so that was a bit unfortunately. However, the waiter was so kind and went out of his way to make sure both of our allergies were taken care of and even brought over the flour bag from the kitchen (!) so my husband could check the ingredients for what he is allergic to. I hope one day I get to go back and I hope they have SOMETHING resembling the lobster pasta. I will think about it the rest of my life. I also had a delicious dessert – a fruit pie type dessert with a crumbling crust.
The setting is also quite lovely. You walk to the seating downstairs and are seated below. They seemed to have some celebrity visitors in their past (unfortunately I'm not familiar with the who's who!), but they signed pizza pans that are hanging on the wall, and artwork also decorates the walls. It reminded us of Kansas City/The Majestic, which felt like a jazz band could start playing at any moment. The wait staff as a whole were very friendly, joking with us (kindly), and ensuring we were taken care of.
Go here if you're GF – heck, go...
