Princess Sichelgaita, the consort of Prince Giovanni, who ruled Salerno from 983 to 999, initiated the construction of a church dedicated to Santa Maria, later known as the Church de Domno. This church was built on her own land situated between the ancient city walls and an additional defensive wall added during the expansion of pre-Longobard Salerno toward the sea. Naturally aligned along an east-west axis, the church occupied only a portion of the available space, creating an open area between its main entrance and a watercourse that bordered the land to the west. The church had three apses that extended toward the east into the land of Count Guaimario, son of Guaiferio, also known as "the Emperor," which, in turn, bordered another parcel of land belonging to Prince Giovanni. Both the church and Guaimario's property were adjoined along their southern sides to the defensive wall, while their northern boundary was delimited by a road beyond which the ancient city curtain wall stood. The presentation of the dishes was a story in itself. Each course was a work of art, worthy of all the Michelin stars. The originality of the plating and the harmony of flavors were simply astonishing. We enjoyed authentic Italian cuisine that revealed itself to us in a new light. We were offered a spacious table in a warm but vibrant wine cellar space that was perfect for friendly conversation with good friends.
The team, which was likely a family or perhaps a lovely husband & wife duo with supporting team members, was attentive, communicative and they all ensured that we were on the same page to find the right dishes and ingredients, including a couple of vegetarian friends with us.
Everything was spot on. The grilled vegetables, seafood, pasta dishes, fish, wine (really reasonably priced, enjoyable local falanghina white wine) and aged grappa to finish were well curated and prepared.
