La Mareggiata — Restaurant in Syracuse

Mareggiata it's the classic turist trap. It was so bad it was almost hilarious. Probably the worst culinary experience of the wohle Sicilian holiday.

The service was rude and unprofessional, waiters were not even trying to be decent, don't know if they are underpaid or overloaded with work but just to give an example when ordering we asked what " pasta mare mosso" was including, the woman didn't even look us in the eyes, like bothered, replying "a bit of everything"...

after ordering we waited for 50 min in the cold completely ignored, drinking the white wine of the house, which was obviously diluted with water.. to a level that was undrinkable.

When finally the antipasti arrived we didn't even manage to finish the abnormal portions (really, big portion is fine but this was like insane, waste of food) that they arrived with the first course making it super unpleasant to continue eating.. especially after the waiter was trying to turn off the outside heaters, again, ignoring the fact that we were still eating.

The bill in the end was also super overpriced for Sicilian standards. We spent 30 euros each with Antipasti, undrinkable wine and a first course.

Just to give an example on how actual good restaurants in Sicily look like, just go a couple of steps away to Locanda del Collegio. You'll find better service, better food, better location...

CAREFUL! We (family of 5ppl) were so naive to trust the „good“ overall reviews. It trapped us into the worst quality of the food we‘ve ever eaten on Sicily, plus very bad service. We are enthusiastic foodlovers who come to Sicily every year, mostly because of the food. I read some reviews after eating and I can confirm the 1 star ratings who the owner of the restaurant calls „human mud“. It represents the strongly rude waiters who don‘t have the classic Sicilian kindness and passion. Even in Germany there are better pasta. What a shame for Sicily!! One reviewer said it well: it‘s a tourist trap in the middle of the center. Rule number 1: Never choose the restaurants that are in the center of tourist hotspots. If food and money means something to you, avoid this place...

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY A reasonable an extensive wine list. Fritto Misto was bountiful although mainly baby shrimp. They serve linguine with baby clams as opposed to spaghetti which is typical in Italy, sauce was good lacking clams. We waited for over an hour after our first course for our seafood dishes. The swordfish was paperthin dry and tasteless. And city known for seafood this was the most disappointing restaurant experience imaginable. They seem disappointed after we waited for an hour for shoe leather piece of fish, I was happy to pay for it just to leave, we decided to go for pizza at a nearby trattoria I was very satisfying compared to this experience.
