Good Experience Overall – Stick to the Seafood Menu

We had dinner at Osteria del Principe - La Cantinaccia in Ortigia and were generally pleased with the experience. We were shown to a table outside on a warm evening. They had two large cooling fans at either end of the outdoor seating area, though we didn’t feel much effect from them – so there’s definitely room for improvement there.

When it came to ordering, we had to wait for one specific waiter, likely because he was the one most comfortable speaking English. Once things got going, however, the service was friendly and helpful throughout – and we appreciated being able to take our leftovers with us.

We ordered two pizzas, which were very good – as you’d expect in Italy, where the pizza standard is generally high. For starters, we had fries, onion rings, and mozzarella sticks, which were unfortunately quite basic and seemed pre-made or frozen. The fries may have been hand-cut, though.

There was a small mishap when a bit of beer was spilled on me during service – nothing major, but a little more care would’ve been nice.

If you visit, we’d recommend going for their seafood menu – it looked delicious and seemed to be what they specialize in.

We ate wednesday with friends and had a great food and time. We went back for festa della pizza tonight BUT things happened a lot different this time.

The waiter gave us an attitude with a face when we told him we were coming for the “Festa”. He really acted unhappy.

Fortunately we were served by a young person who was very professionnal. And once we were served and finished our pizza we were totally ignored by other waiters, waiting our Sorbetto included in the “Festa” deal. After being fed up of waiting we asked for it and we were told there were no more and no replacement except a Limoncello (liquor) unless we pay for a dessert. No way, a deal is a deal. A menu is a menu, right? Especially when a reservation was made hours before.

So we ended with no dolce, receiving a bill that was corrected due to an error. While happy first time and leaving a good tip, we regretted our second time and left to go get our dessert.

The restaurant was recommended to us, I cannot deny that the service and atmosphere are good, the staff were very intentive and knowledgeable, but the food for us let it down. Not because the food was bad, but perhaps what we ordered! The choice was lacking on the menu we received but looking at other tables, they were recieving dishes we didn't see. A shame as we would of ordered other items, like pasta dishes etc. We will try once more but with more research. Don't not try this restaurant just have an idea what you want and tap up the staff...
