We bought three big boxes of capers at €10 each, three one kilogramme bags of chick peas at €5 each, a one kilogramme bag of sun dried tomatoes at €10 and a one kilogramme bag of green olives with oregano at €15 for a total of €70. Very friendly owner who helped with everything, including helping me get my backpack on again!
Tuesday 20 May 2025 to Tuesday 27 May 2025 Our favourite stall is still there on the left! Our first visit was on Friday. Two bags of almonds at €5 each, two big boxes of capers at €10 each, a one kilogramme bag of chick peas at €5 and two bags of chilli flakes at €3 each cost €41. Th market is closed on Sundays so we promised to return on Monday to buy olives and sun dried tomatoes. We came back on Monday, as promised. One kilogramme of small black olives at €11, two vacuum packed packets of pine nuts at €12 each and two one kilogramme bags of sun dried tomatoes at €10 each cost €55. I calculated the total before the owners did and asked for a job, in Italian, when they confirmed I was right!
Tuesday 24 September 2024 to Tuesday 1 October 2024 We visited earlier in the week to see if our usual stall sells the items we wanted. Yes! So we returned on Monday morning. Two large bags (one kilogramme) of chick peas at €5 each and two small bags (200/250 grammes) of pine nuts at €12 each cost €34. We promised to return in May next year and wished the owners a Happy Christmas!
Tuesday 14 May 2024 to Tuesday 21 May 2024. Quite busy pretty early on a Monday morning. We went to the same stall as last year. One kilogramme of large black Sicilian olives at €10, four small boxes of small Sicilian capers at €5 each and two bags of fennel seeds at €3 each cost €36.
Tuesday 26 September 2023 to Tuesday 3 October 2023 Very busy on a Saturday morning but we still managed to navigate the crowds. We went to a stall on the left-hand side, about a quarter of the way down the main street of the market. Four bags of oregano at €3 each, two bags of almonds at €5 each and one kilogramme of large capers at €10 cost €32.
Tuesday 9 May 2023 to Tuesday 16 May 2023 This time we went on a Monday and not all the stalls were open. This time we bought items from a different stall on the other side of the alley. Three bags of oregano, three packets of chilli flakes, two large bags of sun dried tomatoes, two bags of capers, two bags of almonds, one bag of black olives and one bag of green olives cost €53. And we got a free packet of bay leaves!
Friday 25 September 2020 to Friday 2 October 2020 This market sells all manner of local fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. From one stall about a third of the way down on the right hand side we bought two very big bags of sun dried tomatoes at €10.00 each, three bags of almonds (two blanched and one toasted) at three bags for €10.00 and received a free packet of oregano. From one stall which was the second on the left hand side we bought two big bags of oregano at €3.00 each, two bags of chilli flakes at €3.00 each and three boxes of capers at €5.00 each. I said "We will see you next year!" We had to return the next day as it was our last day and we had forgotten to buy black olives! The stall holder recognised us from yesterday and we bought a half kilo of small black olives for €4.00. This time I said "Now we will see you next year!"
Sunday 5 May 2019 to Sunday 12 May 2919 This is an incredibly busy outdoor market selling all manner of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Just don't trying buying sun cream here. (Like one tourist tried to do!) We bought a big bag of sun dried tomatoes (€9.00) and a big bag of black olives (€6.50) from one stall. The owner vacuum packed our purchases at no charge. We also bought two medium sized flat boxes of capers (€10.00 each) and three big bags of chilli flakes (€3.00 each) from...
Read moreThe Ortigia Street market is really great place to explore when you are in sircacuse, the markets are nice and authentic with a stream of locals snapping up the best and freshest produce and fish you can buy. Also if the weather is amazing this is the perfect place to stop by for picnic items on the way to the beach.
Be aware that prices for the same item can change significantly, I paid €5 for almonds in a pretty package while I saw almonds in a plain package at a different store for €2.50 so maybe have a bit of a look around before buying...
I got some amazing fresh strawberries for just €1.75 which was pretty reasonable for a market snack. But sadly I didn't find any mandarins but I did see plenty of blood oranges.
There are also plenty of restaurants around the markets if you are wanting a decent meal. If you are unsure where to buy from get there early and follow the locals. Any store that sells out early is usually the one with the best stuff...
The markets sell everything you could imagine... fruit & vegetables spices and herbs flowers fresh fish meat cheese fresh olives tourist...
Speriamo...
