On a comfortable early May day, three of us enjoyed a delicious and welcoming aperitivo at La Locanda Dei Mori in Taormina. This quaint and lovely bistro is a treasure! I have always enjoyed the pre-dinner time for a drink and a light bite. Especially at twilight, the time sunset blends into dusk and there’s still light in the sky. In other countries, especially America this time before dinner is called Happy Hour. In European countries, it’s viewed as a time to awaken the appetite. (Hence, aperitivo is derived from Latin word “aperire” to open.) We arrived a few minutes before opening and Antonio the owner was so gracious. He gave us a beautiful table as we waited. He returned promptly to take our order. First, we ordered to drink two Aperol Spritz, (prosecco, Aperol and soda) and a non alcoholic soft drink which was a lemon and ginger (zenzero) soda. We were going to dinner later in nearby Forza d'Agrò so we ordered light appetizers. We chose the Bruschetta Special, a mix of 3 kinds of toppings on grilled bread. The Classica had just picked tomato, red onion, olive oil and oregano, Caponata included caramelized eggplant, capers, white onion and lightly dressed with a sweet/sour sauce called agrodolce, the Pistachio was with ground pistachio nuts, lemon and hint of garlic. We received 6. All were freshly prepared, on crunchy Italian bread and delicious. Our favorite was the pistachio! Thickly sliced bread schmeared with the most delightful pistachio pesto. It was creamy with a hint of garlic, lemon and herbs. The top was decorated with two, large in the shell, salted pistachio nuts for extra crunch. Perfection! The experience was tasty, refreshing and hit the spot. If you are in the Taormina area this sweet, little bistro is a must visit. #bruschettapistacchio #pestopistacchio #madehome #sicilia #taormina...

Read moreDO NOT GO! A proper racist place. They will deny service to brown or black people even if the restaurant is empty. Our black friend told us about the racism. I was curious if the rumor is true. So, my friend (who is brown) went there and asked if there's table for four. And they said they are completely booked. Then three of us (white males) went and they said, "Please come. We are free of course". We ordered drinks and my brown friend came to sit with us...the guy at the gate told him rudely, " I told you we are booked". When we told him that that is our friend, he said,"Really?" and disappeared. We had to call them a few times to get any service. They didn’t want to serve us. It was so bad that we laghed.
The food was not good either.
We are reporting this restaurant to the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI).
