The Teatro Antico di Taormina proved to be the perfect backdrop for Andrea Bocelli's unforgettable concert in 2023. This ancient amphitheater, steeped in history and perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, created an atmosphere that was nothing short of magical. The combination of Bocelli’s powerful voice and the venue’s incredible acoustics was a testament to the theater's timeless design. The intimate seating arrangement allowed every audience member to feel connected to the performance, while the open-air setting under the starry Sicilian sky elevated the experience to a divine level. The theater’s ancient stone structure, beautifully illuminated for the evening, added a sense of grandeur and timeless elegance to the event. Teatro Antico di Taormina is not just a place for performances; it is a living piece of history that enhances every note sung or played within its walls. Bocelli’s voice resonating through the theater was a moment that felt both intimate and monumental. For music lovers and history enthusiasts alike, this venue is a must-visit. A truly unparalleled experience that will remain etched in my memory forever.

If you have come to visit Taormina, then this is definitely on your agenda. If you are lucky enough to come when there is an outdoor concert taking place or have night admissions, then you are in for a special treat. The views are amazing, and the computerized recreation of the venue is a great short video to watch. Don't miss walking behind the stage to see the entrance used by today's performers and those over 2000 years ago. The path behind the upper ring of seats has amazing views and a small cafe and bathrooms. When you first enter the area, take the stairs to your left and exit at the first landing above the stage area. You can make your way up gradually, taking in the amphitheater from different angles. Please be sure to wear good footwear - I saw a small girl fall - it is very "rustic". Makes sense when used for a couple of thousand years hahaha. Go to behind the top wall for the views, bathrooms, and cafe. Last, for a nice break from the sun (near the entrance), go into the large bricked area - small museum area and video re-enactment. Make your way behind the stage and then onto the main floor area for a great 360. Have a great day. Thanks.

This is an amazing ancient site and a must see. However in keeping with much of what we have seen it is being commercialised to it's detriment. We arrived at opening time in late May and it wasn't busy and I would highly recommend getting there early. Access is very good but there is very little in the way of maps or guides as to what you are seeing or what has been restored and where. It has fabulous views of Etna and over Taormina. It should be easy to take a seat and drift into the past. However instead it is a building site being converted into a stage and scaffolded seating. So a good proportion is covered by planking and the rooms are boarded into dressing rooms and toilets. Any visit is punctuated by the work and the workers arguing and swearing which does demonstrate the acoustics very well. The only respite was when one of the workers noticed they could see up a woman's dress so work stopped for a few minutes. Doing this to a Unesco site would never be tolerated anywhere else and they should be ashamed. Otherwise it's a solid 5 stars.

We decided to see if the line was long before buying tickets. We usually buy ahead, but the weather had been questionable that day. Our decision to wait was a just fine. We decided not to join a tour, and opted for the audio tour instead. I know we were overcharged for that decision. Nevertheless, it was the correct decision for us as seniors who were already tired and hot from the day. We loved it! Even though the movie screen from the film festival blocked the view and the plastic chairs covered the stone seats, it was worth every euro and every minute and every step of the climb up. The best part were the views. I highly recommend spending time at the top and going to the cafe where you can climb the stairs. We happened to have a clear view in that moment and it was beyond fabulous. I think the tour would have enhanced our knowledge, but it didn’t matter. We loved it.

I hesitated on paying a whopping €12 to see ruins when I have seen SO many Greco-Roman amphitheaters in my life. I’m so glad I did in the end as the setting is just gorgeous and the views, oh the wonderful, wonderful views!! from the ruins are worth every euro. There are placards in English and Italian explaining the history of the site which was much appreciated, and a very cool video depicting how the site might have looked centuries ago. Great visualisation! Some people had audio guides so I have no idea if they were included?! I didn’t need them with the English language placards before entering the site. Very well-maintained site. Café at the top is surprisingly not expensive and my vegan spinach and pumpkin dough pocket was delicious! Can’t say the same for the butter and chocolate biscuits though: tasteless and dry.
