It's been a very long time since I've been wow'ed by a restaurant, and Tora definitely did that. Having been to some very high end sushi places in NY, the only time I ever felt the fish being so fresh and incredible that I just had to keep going back was here. We stumbled upon it while walking around piazza navona, thought we'd break up the pasta and pizza streak and try some lighter foods for lunch, not going in with too many expectations. We noticed very thoughtful details in the decor and design that definitely felt like a lot of heart and talent was poured into it, especially in the backroom, apparently the Japanese chef had helped design the space. We initially ordered some ramen, carpaccio, and sashimi. The ramen was delicious, usually darker broths tend to be quite salty and heavy, this had wonderful balance. Then we got to the carpaccio and sashimi, WOW. The cleanest tasting sashimi I have ever had in my life. May even rival sushi in Japan. I usually don't even bother with hotate, ebi, or ika in the States, but they were so delicate with a beautiful sweetness. I ordered extra sashimi after how incredible the carpaccio was. As sacrilegious as it is to not try additional Italian food on a trip to Italy, we just couldn't miss the chance to have more incredible seafood and ended up going back another 2 times on our last day before leaving. To top it off, they have some of the most phenomenal staff who made the experience so special, and we'll really miss not having this restaurant around at home. The price is also very reasonable, we just spent more and stuffed ourselves every time we go because we know it'll be until next time in Italy before we'd have sashimi that good again. 100% would recommend. If you asked me if between Nobu and this, I'd choose to go back...
Read moreMy wife and I ate here earlier in the week after viewing a few of the nearby attractions. We approached the entrance as they were unlocking the doors at opening time so we were the first ones in the restaurant but that didn’t stop them from treating us like royalty! We had the gyoza tori, as well as ramen, followed by a California roll and godfather roll. (I opted for a second godfather roll for dessert). Everything was of the highest quality and quite literally some of the best sushi and Asian cuisine we have ever indulged in. I failed to catch the names of the host and waitress but they were extremely friendly and polite as well as attentive to our dining needs. Fast forward a few days…today, we found ourselves in the area again and after gorging ourselves on some mediocre pizza and pasta from some of the local tourists joints over the last week, we decided to go back and see our friends at Tora again. This time we arrived about an hour after they opened and the place was PACKED. They still managed to get us seated almost immediately and greeted us with some complimentary Prosecco. Again we started with the gyoza Tori but went for the maguro tartare this time and it was nothing short of heavenly. Round two of the cali roll and godfather and we topped it off with the Niku YakiSoba. After praising the staff for all of their wonderful contributions they thanked us with a complimentary dessert which I forgot the name of🙃. Everyone was so incredibly kind and patient with us and seemed genuinely grateful that we chose to dine with them. Unfortunately our vacation in Rome comes to an end tomorrow but I can assure you I will return to Tora if I ever find myself back in this...
Read moreWe were craving Asian food after weeks and weeks of pasta everyday and ran into this random place with good google reviews. Although it says Asian food it's mostly Japanese sushi and grill with 5-6 Thai items on the menu. We got a combination of things. A small spicy salmon roll, some Aka Ebi sashimi, and some fried rice along with basic edamame. The roll was just very basic and ok. Mark loved the rice with nice little nuggets of pork sprinkled throughout. The raw prawns was delicious, we ate it over a side of sushi rice like a small chirashi. The service was a bit crazy as there was a lot of confusion over when Mark tried to order a glass of red wine. 2 servers came over at separate times and said they would check on which red wine they had by the glass as the one on the menu was not available. Finally one of the other servers came over and explained that there wasn't any. What a lot of confusion. After our drinks came we waited to order and finally that same server who solved our drinks issue came over to check on whether we had ordered. No we said so he went in to send someone out to take our order. She came over and asked whether we had ordered yet. What a crazy mess. Anyway they were all really friendly and bought one of our beers for us and offered us the staff discount next time we came back. We would give it another try since it's so close...
