The inviting interior made our party eager to love this place, but unfortunately our dinner turned out to be severely sub-par. The first star is for the atmosphere: everything is clean and neat and gives a great first impression. The second star is for the delicious fried red onion we got as an appetizer. What followed was a baffling array of food prepared from low quality ingredients, overcooked and underseasoned. Three of us ordered the swordfish steak: a truly dry experience. We suspect the catch was not fresh, and therefore overcooked to be on the safe side. One of us got the deep fried calamari and shrimp, probably straight from the freezer. We were expecting fresh seafood since we’re right by the sea, but it goes to show you never can tell. Perhaps the most baffling presentation came in the form of a ”calabrese sauce” which turned out to be straight up American barbecue sauce with random bits of vegetables. I ordered a green salad, expecting at least the bare minimum of a vinaigrette on an assortment of fresh greens, but received a pile of bland iceberg lettuce without any dressing. The excellent white wine got the job done and our birra was delightful, of course. Service was OK, albeit slow. We probably waited for our food close to an hour - not a problem when you’re in good company. We never got the water we ordered, but that’s no big deal as we didn’t pay for it in the end. We could tell this meal was not cooked with love. I wish the kitchen all the best in developing their craft...

We were in Tropea for five evenings so tried different restaurants for the first four and decided that we would return to our favourite on the fifth…we ate here on the first night and came for our last evening because we loved it so much. Both times we had the marinated anchovies for starter, and both times my husband had the grilled swordfish and grilled vegetables. The first night I had the seafood carbonara (packed with seafood) and the last night I had the braised octopus on potato. The potato was the most delicious I’ve eaten, the octopus was perfectly cooked and so tasty. The marinated anchovies (so good we had them twice) were outstanding. The prices are the same as every other restaurant in Tropea but the food is more high end. Excellent value. The service was fantastic, warm and friendly.

The first night we walked in without a reservation but we made a reservation for the last evening as it was a Saturday. I’d say it depends what...

Dining at Osteria Antico proved to be a delightful experience, even on an exceptionally busy evening in Tropea. The staff demonstrated commendable attentiveness, swiftly reorganizing tables to accommodate our party of four. The local red wine was a highlight of the evening, its character enhanced by a thoughtful and skillful presentation: the waiter gently rotated each glass to aerate the wine, a refined technique that elevated both its aroma and flavor—a gesture as elegant as it was memorable. As for the cuisine, while most dishes were pleasing, certain plates distinguished themselves with exceptional quality. In particular, the tuna with pistachio crust stood out as a true triumph—flavorful, balanced, and masterfully prepared. Overall, Osteria Antico offers both warmth and craft, making it a destination worth visiting for those seeking an elevated yet welcoming dining experience in Tropea.

We met the loveliest host standing outside the front of this Osteria and decided to return for dinner . What an excellent decision that was . This is a welcoming Osteria and is run by gentle & kind people . We had the onion fritters, potato cakes with Nduja hearts , sword fish & tuna with pistachio crust . All cooked to perfection and accompanied by a dangerously, palatable local rose .The Osteria is located in an atmospheric ,historic building.. It is reasonably priced and a hidden gem . Highly recommended for a memorable experience.
