Gentleman at the pub was salty- he expressed his irritation that I’d dare put my feet up on a stool in the back room which (was completely vacant).
The family was visiting the museum. I waited at the corner pub, where we intended to do lunch after my family finished at the museum. Ordered a cafe latte and a water. Service was not especially warm, but totally cordial. Embarrassingly, my ankles had become so swollen and painful with the walking and the heat (getting old is a bummer). I, therefore, put my aching feet up on a stool, careful not to actually put my shoes on the stool, but rather the back of my thighs. Wanted to be conscientious of putting dirty shoes where someone would eventually sit. One of the staff members commented “this is not your house” Very clearly expressing his irritation. Maybe he was having a bad day already? Maybe he doesn’t like his job? He certainly didn’t bother to wonder if I was experiencing any problems. It’s too bad that one encounters someone who 1) lacks a basic level of hospitality, and 2) would jump to conclusions and assume that I did not have a legitimate reason to put the back of my thighs on one of his stools. This place initially seemed so unpretentious and warm. But will not...
Read moreWe arrived in Venice pretty late and this was the only place open so our decision was made up for us.
Starting with the positive, it is open pretty late and is generally busy even then...seems to be mostly students having a drink outside and the atmosphere is pleasant if probably a little loud for the neighbours - not my problem though :-)
When we arrived, we just required something to eat. The staff were friendly and helpful - quite pleasant actually. The kitchen was already closed but some cicchetti and poppetti were available...probably from earlier in the morning. However, beggars cannot be choosers so we ordered a few.
They were heated up in a microwave and brought to our table where we filled with instant buyers remorse. Just not very good at all. Anyway, lesson learned - do not buy the snack foods left over from the day crowd.
I honestly cannot comment on the freshly made food from the kitchen and would probably go back to try it out as the staff, atmosphere, location, indoor area and outdoor seating all seemed quite good. By all means order the drinks and enjoy the vibe however, avoid the cicchetti...
Read moreCorner Pub is the kind of spot you find when you’re sick of masks and menus written for tourists. It’s wedged in Dorsoduro, a stone’s throw from the Guggenheim, but feels like it belongs to the people who live here. Small room, wood tables, cicchetti lined up behind the bar, panini stacked like bricks, and spritzes poured strong and cheap. The staff work fast, no fake charm, just a nod and a grin. Locals lean in close, students drift through, and travelers who stumble in often don’t leave for hours.
It’s lively, gritty, loud in the right way. You pay three euros for a spritz, grab a sandwich, and watch the crowd thicken around you until the place hums like an engine. It’s not polished, not made to impress, and that’s the point. The Corner Pub doesn’t dress Venice up in costume. It pours the drink, feeds you well, and lets you belong...
