The baked goods merchandised in this bakery’s display case will no doubt tantalize your senses.
Speaking from experience.
This was my first visit, and I knew I was in for a treat when at 10 a.m. on a Friday there was a line out the door. Lines are usually a promising sign of a good business. And the experience was worth the wait.
Indeed, this bakery serves a diverse selection of upscale pastries and other gastronomic delights.
On your visit you can expect to see huge cookies with eclectic and traditional flavors, croissants, scones, brioche, muffins, and more.
In addition to fresh baked bread there are paninis and other sandwiches available for lunch.
In spite of all that mentioned above, I have only had the Quiche of The Day. It was ham, egg, and cheddar cheese, and it was good. IMO, it would have been much better hot or at least lukewarm, but instead it was served at room temperature.
The lady taking my order said they weren’t able to heat it due to COVID-19.
Aside from that, good experience. The prices can be on the dear side, as in “oh dear!”. So don’t be surprised if a huge cookie or a single slice of quiche cost $6.00.
All in all, 4.4 stars out of 5, or said another way, an 88 out of 100.
Final thought and tip. If you’re new to the area consider walking to Alamo Square Park which is home to the iconic Painted Ladies and about an 8 minute walk south on Steiner St. That way you get a taste of a local bakery, sightsee, stretch your legs and walk off whatever calories you’ve picked up from Jane’s Bakery.
Whatever your choice, I hope you enjoy. Stay safe and cheers to your...
Read moreJane the Bakery is awesome! They have some of the best pastries and breads in San Francisco! Our favorite items are the babka, scones, and coffee cakes—but there’s truly something here for everyone. The lunch sandwiches are yummy too!
The only problem with Jane is that the ordering and checkout process is really flawed and inefficient. While waiting in line at a good bakery is somewhat normal, there are changes that Jane can easily implement to improve the customer and employee experience and the efficiency of the process, and thus increase profits for the business. For example, Jane should have an additional checkout station and an employee who focuses on transactions/payments. This will really streamline the checkout process and save a lot of time for both customers and employees. Just today, upon arrival, there was no line initially, yet there was a single customer who had a complicated order, and since the payment terminal and employees were tied up trying to process her order and payment, it resulted in a huge delay that was unnecessary. A huge line resulted—the line of customers stretched to the neighboring businesses all because of this single customer and the inefficiencies at Jane. If there was a second payment terminal and a staff member focused on only transactions, there would not have been a line.
Making these changes will be a significant improvement for not only customers, but also employees and the...
Read moreUpdate 2021: Downgrading my prior rating. It seems they must have lost a prior pastry chef - they don't make the really excellent items from a couple years ago anymore. The new ones in rotation are more basic in flavors and tend to be overly sugary.
The service is also really annoying - the staff seem generally unmotivated, and will do things like re-arrange bread on the shelves and shuffle around behind the counter not doing anything in particular while a long line of customers just stand there. A single cash register is totally insufficient for the weekend line. We used to go here every weekend but no longer - it's not worth the 20 minute wait in line.
This is a delightful bakery. Not only are their basic croissants and breads top notch, they also are very creative with flavors, both savory and sweet. A croissant dough tart with carrots and goat cheese and a hint of curry and thyme suggests a Thanksgiving flavor. Their citrus tart isn't just straightforward lemon with meringue, it also has a hint of raspberry, grapefruit, and rosemary in the crust, which worked amazingly well together. The avocado toast is so much more than just avocado. I would rate this as one of the 3 best bakeries in SF. The only downside is not much room to sit down and eat, hopefully it's a nice day and you can eat your pastries in the park...
