This is the unique cafe you dreamed of. Stellar service, delicious food, and ambiance you can practically hold in your hand result in a must-visit for any traveler passing through Aomori City.
Cafe Cleopatra is hard to describe. It is heavily influenced by the art, music, and styles of Vienna, circa Mozart. The name itself hearkens back to the Ottoman/Turkish craze going through Europe at the time (think of Mozart's opera "The Escape from the Seraglio") and the art is clearly influenced by someone's imagined Vienna. Gentle music plays overhead in the cafe, all from the late baroque to early romantic period, and it's not just the popular tunes! Midway back in the shop, there is a large (and I do mean large) print of a courtly scene in Europe around the time - I assume it is a print, because it is 70 inches (175 cm) diagonal, and would cost a fortune to ship safely to Japan. But this adds to the ambiance. You sit on seemingly antique embroidered chairs with apparently old tables, and you marvel at the keen attention to detail that is around.
The food itself was spectacular. As the entire restaurant is tobacco-free, there is no ash or smoke in the air to poison the excellent flavors. I enjoyed a milk tea, the toast (with jam, an egg, and two grapes), and the oft-recommended apple pie. All of these were excellent choices, and they were served quickly and with good humor.
I am in Aomori for another two days, and I don't imagine I'm going anywhere else for...
