heard lots of good things about this place. unfortunately, it was a great let down. i am a huge fan of japanese food and mentaiko, hence i was excited to give this place a try. we came here just after opening time and received a queue number with an estimated waiting time of 15 minutes. we stood outside to wait and there was no one else waiting outside the store. we continued to wait for the 15 minutes and there was no sign of it being our turn, neither did we see other customers entering the store (there were at least 3 groups ahead of us based on the queue numbers seen on the tablet). we decided to enter the store and check on the staff’s tablet on the counter inside and saw “呼叫” next to our queue number on the staff’s tablet. we were completely unaware that our number was being called as there was no announcement system. what puzzled us further was that upon entering, we saw many empty tables (more than half the restaurant was empty) and we didn’t see anyone entering or leaving the store for the entire duration that we were waiting outside.
the food looks much better than it tastes. unfortunately the omelette was one dimensional in taste and texture and got surfeiting soon. the unagi was below average (especially for unagi that you can find in japan) and very expensive for what it was. we are not small eaters but we struggled to finish this meal.
the restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. however this meal was completely not the worth the money and there are better restaurants in fukuoka to get your...
Read moreI came here because of the reviews. lol I saw a lot of people talking about it, so I had to come and try it myself.
I arrived at the restaurant at around noon and it was very crowded.
But it was easy to get a queue number. Just walk up to the machine in front of the restaurant and press the button.
The queue said I had to wait for over 30 people, which would be more than an hour.
So I went to relax at a cafe next door, which was also delicious.
But I didn't have to wait as long as the queue said. You can check your queue status anytime by scanning the QR code. When it's almost your turn, it will notify you to go wait in front of the restaurant.
I ordered two dishes:
Rice with mentaiko, fish roe, and fried egg
Rice with mixed seafood and soft-boiled egg
The rice with mentaiko was delicious. The fried egg that came with it made the dish even more flavorful and prevented it from being too rich. The rice with mixed seafood was also excellent. I was surprised that the seafood had a strong flavor. The ingredients were fresh and the price was reasonable. It lived up...
Read moreThe most popular kaisendon spot in Fukuoka to get a taste of the insta-famous mentaiko don. Strongly recommend checking out this spot if you are a mentaiko fanatic like me. It was worth the effort to get up early for these luscious seafood bowls.
TIPS: They post the queuing QR code outside at 10am every day. Make sure to download LINE in order to get a waitlist code. We lined up at 9:40am, took ticket no.13 and successfully got seated in the first round.
*Mentai Ikura Tamagoyaki Don 明太いくら玉子焼丼 The seafood don of my dreams. We ordered one regular and one DOUBLE mentaiko. I think one mentaiko is actually (salty) enough, but double mentaiko means double happiness. You can enjoy every bite with a huge stack of mentaiko, ikura and tamago. Chef’s kiss.
*Luxury Kaisendon 豪華海鮮丼 The don was loaded up with various fresh sashimi, including tuna, ebi, ikura and uni. It wasn’t as life-changing as the iconic mentaiko don. My advice: save your quota, all in mentaiko.
**Mentai Don and Kaisendon are only available...
