MILAN — Restaurant in Fukuoka

While I hate to base a negative review on a single dish, my experience at Milan fell short, particularly with their take on chicken biryani. Instead of the anticipated basmati rice and authentic Indian spices, I received what seemed like Japanese-style fried rice with Indian seasoning. The inclusion of fried egg, unheard of in traditional biryani, made the meal less enjoyable for me. Despite the well-seasoned dish and decent portion, it deviated significantly from the authentic Indian version.

The mango wine tasted good but the excessive ice was a drawback. Offering a smaller glass sans the dilution of the multiple ice cubes would be an improvement. The service, courtesy of a sweet lady handling orders and payments, added a pleasant touch to my experience. I believe the restaurant is run by Indians from New Delhi.

I understand that striking the right balance between adapting to local tastes and preserving the authenticity of a cuisine can be challenging. Indian restaurants may need to adjust their dishes for the local Japanese palate, but there are instances where these adaptations seem a bit excessive, such as Milan's chicken biryani. For those seeking an authentic biryani experience, Milan might not be the ideal choice.
