koba — Restaurant in Hiroshima

Koba is one of my favorite bars I’ve ever been to. Bom (the owner) is one of the friendliest people you’ll meet and is an incredible chef in the kitchen. The smoked yellow-tail is particularly good (if you’re into smoked cuisine). The saki list is great, and can quickly lead to trying more and more. If it’s not too busy, you might get to hangout with Bom, who is full of hilarious jokes and great recommendations. If you’re a fan a metal music it’s an added benefit, because the music is great, but don’t let that deter you if you aren’t, because the music is never too loud that you can’t have a conversation. Not just a top izakaya in Hiroshima. Koba is a top izakaya in Japan. At least in my opinion. First off, the vibe is great; Metal and rock from several decades. The service is stellar. There are only two people, so if you're staying for food, be prepared to wait. The wait is totally worth it. The food is delicious. Absolutely delicious. The gentleman doing the majority of the cooking is a dynamo. We had the miso pork steak, chicken miso cream, fish sausage Kamaboko, fried fish paste, and the anchovy cream cheese crackers. My home from home.. run by my brother from another mother!

I spent 3 nights in Hiroshima. 2 of them were spent in this bar meeting all sorts of cool people from all different walks of life. The final night I spent an evening with Bom the owner having some amazing Japanese food and going to a metal gig. Getting the time to know him the dude is so down to earth and totally genuine. He shows the true spirit of giving without the need for anything in return.

The first night I attended the place was packed out from open to close. And not once did Bom and the beautiful Miwa drop their smiles or friendly attitude.

One day.. I WILL return to this amazing place.
