It's generally not a shock to me anymore that anything can be found Japan (and especially in Tokyo), whether it be Japanese (obviously), Vietnamese, Italian or Iranian food, amongst other... But in quainter Kamakura, stumbling upon a German bakery (Konditorei) and café, serving a choucroute garnie (as the Germans would say), well that was a happy serendipitous event. Part of a set, including a drink and dessert, the choucroute plate offered the perfect mix and portion of ham, sausage, bacon and potatoes, covered in sauerkraut. I could only complain about the small portion of accompanying mustard (which was supplemented as soon as I politely asked for a little more : mo chiotto onegaishimasu). A side plate of three (or four?) buttered slices of various types of homemade bread wasn't necessary, but it sure was appreciated! Fresh and warm. The dessert, Japanese size (small), was one choux à la crème (cream puff), and I chose to have it with Ceylon tea. Now, sampling a German speciality while in Japan might not be your priority, but if ever you feel like it (and I certainly had the appetite for it at lunch time before climbing through Hasa Dera nearby), I do recommend dropping by Bergfeld. Please note, though I didn't sample them, that they offer various other sandwiches and desserts/treats. They probably are worth a visit as well just for a "cake setto" !

As a Swiss person who really enjoys European style bakeries with restaurants at home, this for sure gets my stamp of approval / authenticity! The ambiance in this cute café is amazing and the calm demeanor of the staff will transfer onto you. I had the B.L.T meal set with an iced coffee and enjoyed every bite. Can highly recommend for anyone who seeks a European break from Japanese cuisine or anyone who wants to try something that is very unique (in a good way) and hard to find in Japan.

Easily one of the best cafes I’ve been to in japan. I don’t like salad and I enjoyed every bite of my salad. The soup, sandwich, and coffee were all equally great. Great atmosphere, pretty location with nice windows overlooking a nice, small street....
