Tried to eat at Sushi Yamamoto (鮨山もと) in Hase in July 2023. The online reviews looked promising. When we walked in, there was a family at the sushi bar who had just finished eating. The father started telling us how lucky we were to just walk in and eat since he had tried twice before and was turned away and finally made a reservation. Just as we got settled, the chef, Yamamoto-san, holds up a tablet with the words, "I have a reservation coming soon. I only have enough rice for them." Surprised that a place with such a good reputation didn't have enough rice, we left. We found another restaurant very close by and nearer to Hase Station called, Kohana Sushi, 小花寿司. It was one of the best meals we had during our three weeks in Japan! Great food, no...
Read moreHighly recommended to make a reservation by phone first. If you don’t have a local phone number, you can do what I did — visit the restaurant the day before to reserve for the next day. Although the restaurant is fairly spacious, they seem to serve only five customers at a time.
The chef doesn’t speak much English, but they do provide an English menu and even a book that explains different types of sushi in English, which helped me understand what I was eating.
I ordered the Omakase 10pcs and 5pcs, plus an extra order of flounder sushi and a glass of sake. The sake was light and smooth, and every piece of sushi was absolutely delicious. Through this experience, I really understood how sushi rice enhances the flavor of raw fish! The chef started with mild white fish sushi and gradually progressed to the rich-tasting fatty tuna, which made for a perfectly balanced meal. I’ve included pictures of some of my favorite pieces below — feel free (or give me a like) to show them to the chef when ordering.
Throughout the meal, both the sushi chef and local Japanese customers warmly introduced the types of sushi I was eating. One customer even told me, "People who are seeking foodies delight will come to this restaurant."
I strongly recommend that anyone visiting Kamakura should try this sushi restaurant!
Read moreThis was one of the nicest sushi experiences I had in Japan. I went for lunch and got the sushi selection for 2200y. The menu has photos for non Japanese speakers and they even give you a little book that explains the origins of sushi, how to eat it and about the seasonal fish. The food was absolutely incredible and lots of it! The intimate atmosphere was very welcoming . Highly recommend a visit. It’s on the second floor so...
