This was a magical experience! We made our way through a narrow back alley, only to find ourselves in a peaceful garden. Indoors was quiet, calm, and warm.
And the food! We were given trays with about 13 different dishes, each with amazing flavor and texture, plus rice and miso soup with mushrooms. And after there was a choice of tea and a dessert as well. As we were eating I thought "this chef knows something about food that most people don't know" ...
The woman running the restaurant was very friendly and spoke pretty good English! And the price was beyond reasonable.
If you are tourists like us, a few tips. 1.) Know that you have to reserve online two days ahead of time (that is when she starts cooking your food), and that reservations might fill up before that. If you are having a hard time with the website I highly recommend asking a Japanese-speaking friend or hotel staff member to help you. 2.) Don't be afraid to enter the back alley behind a residential house to get to the entrance. It's all part of the experience.
Due to time constraints, we had to go out of our way to get a reservation at this restaurant, but we were so glad that we did. During almost two weeks in Japan this was one of our best food-related...
Read moreI found this place on Google maps and didn't even read the comments so I wasn't aware it requires reservation. The owner was so nice she let me in without reservation (please don't repeat my mistake, the place might be already full, I was lucky). She served me water immediately and it felt heavenly after walking under the sun for so long. The food was amazing and every bite was coming with a feeling. I was thinking that you practice mindful eating in Japan even without trying. The flavor of the dishes was a new experience for me. After the set menu, I was served a tea and some small snacks. It was a lovely experience and I would like to...
Read moreKitoToki was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The host is unbelievably friendly and talented, and the space is incredibly cute. We were here at the beginning of a honeymoon bicycle tour and had made a booking for lunch and miso making. We relied heavily on Google Translate to communicate, but she basically explained every single ingredient and process. We were spoiled with the cornucopia of culinary delights she offered us, and we learned a lot about miso itself. Our kilogram of miso paste is now fermenting on a dark shelf in our kitchen across the world. Her little dog is so adorable, too. Thank you so much for this...
