We went to Kanazawa Yokoyama as a birthday celebration, as recommended by hotel staff, who were able to book in a last minute reservation on the night of our arrival. Though more expensive than standard restaurants, we were excited to go after reading the outstanding reviews. To our absolute delight, the reviews were spot on and chef yokoyama did not disappoint. We were served a 12 dish course with an additional welcome sake to kick things off. Each dish had an exquisite combination of unique flavours and textures and was beautifully presented. Chef Yokoyama was the most delightful personality who really went above and beyond to attend to our needs, answer our questions and make us feel very welcome. More importantly, his passion and dedication to food and cooking is what really stood out - he visits the local seafood market to bid for the best fish/crabs/seafood at 0300 EVERY day, and subsequently designs a new menu inspired by what he successfully obtains from the market. It was my first fine dining experience where I left feeling very full. To top things off, he stood outside in the cold (5 degrees) at 11pm waving until we walked 100m down the road and turned the corner out of site. Overall this meal was the defining meal and one of the highlights of our trip around Japan. Thanks again chef Yokoyama and team, we will absolutely return again, hopefully in the not too distant future! Best wishes from...
Read moreI very rarely write a glowing restaurant review. Food and dining are so personal. This experience merits every superlative I can muster.
From the decor and furnishings to the handcrafted plates and bowls and dishes and mugs this restaurant shows from the moment you walk in how deeply the chef has thought about his craft.
The drink menu is thoughtful and priced fairly. Every question we asked—sometimes through google translate—was considered carefully and the sake they recommended was delightful.
The food though was truly the star. Chef Yokoyama prepared incredible food in a variety of styles and what was so striking was how every course from the sushi to the kaiseki style soup to the charcoal grilled fish to the sukiyaki beef was incredible. It was if I had visited the seven best restaurants in town without leaving my seat.
Sometimes I leave high end restaurant feeling hungry. Tonight we nearly begged the chef for mercy. But of course none was given and truly none was merited: both dessert courses finished the night in a genuinely complementary fashion.
It would be one thing each course was perfect. In fact they were. What’s truly striking is how each course interacts perfectly with the others.
This is long enough. To be short: go eat here. Get the expensive option. Order some sake. Use google translate to talk to Chef Yokoyama and have the best night of your...
Read moreFabulous spot for lunch, walked by and got a reservation for the day after.
Food-wise you get seasonal sets of various sizes to choose from, 4 - 6 courses for lunch, we got the 5 course set for 5700 JPY each which has been really great value. Flavours were great, and you can really taste the seasonal freshness. There also is a sense of playfulness in Chef Yokoyama's choice of arrangement and you can also feel that in his friendly attitude despite not speaking much English (google translate app and his assistant worked wonders!) Plus they had a book of fish and plants with their names in english so you know what you're eating.
I can't wait to plan dinner for the next time we visit Kanazawa, this was the highlight of our...
