This place is difficult to review because if you’re coming to Kochi for one day and want to have the famous traditional foods, this is not the place. You’re not gonna get the delicious tataki or the straw fire Bonita. There’s also no river shrimp or moray eel in the course menu.
That said, for the ¥6000 menu I had an absolutely delicious variety of clams and other crustaceans, including one of the best oysters I’ve ever eaten. The free range chicken was also very fine.
The sake recommendations were great and the owner is personable and fun.
Now the awkward parts: the sashimi is really not very good and almost every piece had bits that I had to spit out because I couldn’t chew through them.
Part of sitting at a counter is watching the chef do the preparations, but this place still lives in the corona era and there are dividers that block your view not just from other patrons, but from the preparation area as well. You’re in your own little cubicle. For some people that may be a positive thing, but it was a disappointment for me.
There’s not a lot of communication about what the course menu entails and so all of a sudden some guy emerges and says “this is the end”. That makes it a bit difficult to pace yourself in terms of alcohol etc
In general, I’d say, if you only have one night in Kochi, don’t go here, despite the relatively high average rating. However, if you’ve already done all of the classic dishes at other places, you’ll have a unique and complimentary...
