During my trip to Kumamoto, I had the pleasure of dining at Sumo Sushi Taihou Heya, a must-visit sushi spot located in the heart of the city on Shinshigai Street. This establishment is a favorite among locals, and it’s easy to see why.
The sushi here is crafted with fresh ingredients and meticulous attention to detail. I highly recommend trying the uni (sea urchin) sushi, white fish tataki, and the anago (conger eel) sushi—each dish was exceptional.
While it’s advisable to make a reservation from abroad, there’s a helpful tip: even during late hours, walk-ins can often secure a seat.
Sumo Sushi Taihou Heya also offers a unique payment experience, adding to its charm. If you’re looking to savor authentic Japanese flavors, this is the place to be.

When you can't do Japanese, you write the Japanese sounds down on a paper and someone need to help translate it into Japanese and pass to the chef. So grateful that they are able to accommodate that. Would come back again, but seems really hard to get seated without a...
