Wow, I'm surprised that it's rated lower than 4.5 stars. The ramen here was the best you could get in Kumamoto. They served many famous people as well. If you pass the road, they had a Kumamon figure with recorded advertisement on 24/7 and YES THEY ARE VERY CHEAP. The cheapest ramen I've ever tasted (I was a ramen hunter) with the best taste as well! Their cheapest menu was 360 yen and the best thing was that you can get a noodle refill for half the bowl's price. Loved that. Any better? Absolutely! Should you stay long in Kumamoto, they'd give you (or cou could try asking for) a discount card to stamp upon. I got many during my 11 months exchange period, and that's especially because I always go there together with my boyfriend and usually other people. Got stamped to the full with every people who came, and the owner (?) was kind to let me use the discount card over and over until the last time I ate there before my stay'd be up, the new guy took the card away from me (it seemed like the proper way to do it; submit the card to use/redeem and fill a new one), that's how I know that the usual guy was benevolent to me and my group. The discount card had a half price noodles at 10 stamps (easy to achieve should you eat in a group), cheap additional gyoza at 5, and I don't know if there's any new version of it. But anyway, SUPER RECOMMENDED! Frequented this ramen shop for...
Read moreMinor annoyance: they use narrow but deep bowls, which makes digging out the last few noodles a pain. Major annoyance: it's a smoker-friendly establishment, so it smells pretty bad.
The ramen was good and cheap. We were happy to find that the cigarette smell didn't affect our taste, because the tonkotsu broth is really good. Oily, but well-seasoned, plus you can toss in garlic chips if you want a further kick.
We got both the jumbo meat gyoza and their "Grand Prix" golden ones, and I think I preferred the former... thought that the filling was more moist and flavorful in...
Read moreAKA Ougon Ramen. The name is not found on google maps but this has got to be one of the best Kumamoto traditional ramen. Yummy thick creamy porky soup at very reasonable prices. No English menu but the nice waiter there can explain in English. No ticket order machine and no need to figure out what to order either because they take orders. Best part was they are open 24 hours!! Was craving for one more ramen before heading back to Fukuoka early morning and they are just perfect....
