I stumbled upon Nijo Eki-Mae Okonomiyaki in Kyoto entirely by chance, initially planning to eat at the chicken shop downstairs. But the pictures of food outside caught my attention, so I went up—and I’m so glad I did! We were greeted by friendly staff, and the air was filled with the delicious smell of grilling food, instantly setting a welcoming tone. Sitting at a table with a built-in blacktop grill and surrounded by locals, we knew we were in for a good meal.
With no English menu, we relied on Google Translate, which worked well. We ordered the Omi beef hormone yakisoba, a standout dish made with tender Omi beef and rich yakisoba noodles. The beef itself was savory, and its juices infused the noodles, adding depth and richness. The pork yakisoba was equally satisfying, kept warm and flavorful by the grill at our table.
We also added some gyoza, which paired wonderfully with our drinks, making the entire meal a delicious and immersive experience. This spot is a must-visit in Kyoto if you’re looking to enjoy authentic flavors with a relaxed, local vibe.

Read moreWe ate here in the evening (around 8:30pm) and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. We had the suggested dinner set which was ¥3000 per person. The dinner set menu was in English, but their regular menu is not. The dinner set was multiple courses and included salad, seasoned cucumbers, sliced steak, gyoza, and green onion/pork okonomiyaki and yuzu sherbet. Highly suggest this set, everything was delicious!
We also had another order of steak with roasted vegetables as the steak portion in the set was a bit small and we were very hungry from walking most of the day. You probably would not need to order more food if you had other meals throughout the day or weren’t putting in lots of walking miles!
The servers spoke enough English to help us order and answer any questions we had, and were very patient with our limited Japanese! Our hotel is right down the street from here and we plan to...
