I am new to the area and needed a break from all the touristy destinations and shops so I stumbled upon this book cafe. There was a sign out with book cafe written in a word collage format. The atmosphere had a cozy vibe and was well-decorated with books and other trinkets. Even though I didn't know how to speak Japanese the owner warmly greeted me. He guided me through the menu and explained in detail of his signature dishes. I got the pork dish with 7-day marinated pork, homemade mustard and a vinegar-soy sauce blend that tied everything together. It was very gourmet and I felt at home.
I had a very insightful conversation with the owner. Although we had a language barrier we used Google Translate to communicate. We got to know each other a bit more and had deep conversations on matters like politics and lifestyle in Japan, likewise I shared my experiences having lived in America. A perfect, quiet, break from the craziness surrounding the Fushimi Inari nowadays. A very welcoming owner, sharing with us his detailed menu of food and drinks, a lot of it locally made or sourced. We ate the Kyoto style udon which was great, the sake was excellent, and I (as a red bean lover) truly enjoyed the hand made traditional snacks.
