After you're done jostling amongst the other tourists in Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, head through Arashiyama Park towards the Katsura River and you'll find this humble-looking riverside restaurant called Kameyamaya. For just 1,500 yen, you can get their Nishin (i.e herring) Teishoku; an absolutely amazing set meal with a lots of interesting little side dishes curated to complement a good slab of grilled herring. Everything was well-chosen and put-together and eating around the set was such a joy, discovering and combining different tastes and textures together in oft surprising ways. The herring itself was firm, tasty and without any fishy taste. Its bones were also so soft that they were completely edible (at least I hope they were cos I ate everything😬😂). I'm normally not a fish kind of guy, usually opting for the meat option when available, but this herring was something else. Nishin also happens to be a famous dish in Kyoto. Ended the meal with another famous Kyoto dish that is often eaten in the summer: Kuzukiri. These are transparent, jelly-like noodles made from arrow-root starch. Very similar to Konjac. This place served them in a chilled, fruit-cocktail like concoction, making it a light, refreshing dessert to end the meal before getting back out there into that unrelenting summer sun. *this place is cash-only so do make sure to bring enough cash along

We felt like we had to try Kameyamaya because Google Maps categorizes it as “Kyoto-style Japanese cuisine,” not to mention it has good reviews, as well as inexpensive food in an expensive touristy area. We got a nishin sugatani (Pacific herring cooked in a sauce with predictable Japanese flavors—soy sauce, mirin, sake, etc.). We actually wanted their teishoku (set lunch), but they weren’t serving it that day so I asked if I could have the nishin with a side order of rice, which I thought our server might say was not possible, but to my surprise he was perfectly fine with it. I knew it wasn’t going to fill me up so I got a Kyoto beer (they had Kolsch style), which not only tasted great, but surprisingly matched well with the food. We also got an oyako donburi (chicken and egg in a bowl of rice). Both dishes came with some tsukemono pickles, which complimented the main dishes and rice quite well. The nishin was cooked perfectly, but the oyako donburi was just okay. I’d go back again and hope they have teishoku back on the menu. Besides the food and beer, seating is outdoors fronting the promenade and overlooking the river where you can view the scenery and dozens of tourists enjoying themselves on boats. I’d rather eat in this kind of atmosphere instead of anywhere else.

We're just walking out of Arashimaya park and came across this restaurant and decided to try it as it looked really quaint! We were seated upstairs. My favourite type tatami places - take off your shoes and sit cross legged on a cushion with a low table. Large windows with a great view of the river and the trees on the other side of the gorge. Also a cool breeze given that it's unseasonably warm! We ordered a gyudon each (egg and beef on rice) and shared a tempura and a grilled smoked saba (mackerel). The gyudon was pretty good. Not gourmet but what you would get as street food so hot and filling. The egg was nicely cooked and mixed so well with the rice. The tempura was okay; I had the vegetable and a prawn which wasn't as crispy as I would like but no real complaints. The saba wasn't what we expected - kind of hard from being smoked (or maybe pickled?) and quite strong taste. Not something I would order again. Overall, a pretty decent restaurant with good views and a limited but decently executed menu. Note that it's a cash only place.

Heartwarming, soul-nourishing comfort food against a stunning river vista. Small son and mom operation that deserves all the glowing reviews it gets. Service was warm, personal and engaging. Shown to our floor seating upstairs (great views) and offered English menus when asked. Food was fairly priced and came quickly. The oden was served steaming from the kitchen - flavorful with the radish, octopus, tofu, konyac, fishcake, boiled egg and chicken cooked to perfection in the same dashi broth. The soba and gyudon (also available in bento sets) came in quick succession. Fairly priced and generous - the meals were well-presented, tasty and satisfying. Even the whole oranges served with the sets were amazing. The whole dining experience here was a surprisingly welcome respite from all the tourist chaos just a few streets away. Well worth the wait.

We arrived in Arashiyama around noon and headed to this restaurant. It took an hour from registration to being seated in a traditional room where we took our shoes off. The room only had three tables, and we were fortunate to be seated at the middle table. The waitress expected us to place our order once seated, it is understandable since it was a busy day and in hindsight we should had decided early but we took extra time before deciding to settle on Nishin teishoku, Yodofu teishoku, Dashimaki tamago, and Tanin donburi. Tea was served free of charge. It was mesmorising to see the food occupying the entire table. Each dish was well seasoned, from the octopus, tofu to the sweets. Overall, the waiting time was rewarded with a wonderful dining experience.

Great little restaurant on the walking trail from the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest to Iwatayama Monkey Park. Situated along the river making it great for a peaceful retreat after the crowds in the heavily trafficked bamboo forests. We got our seats in the upstairs tatami seating area, which offered amazing views and awesome atmosphere. Service was great and food came really fast, which was much needed after the 45 minute wait to get in. The food itself was delicious, especially the zaru soba and tempura set. P.S. Menu was in both Japanese and English and it is short with much of food sold in sets which we personally found really helpful when deciding what to order.
