Kohaku — Restaurant in Kyoto

⚠️There is a table charge, it comes with an appetizer. This is normal in Japan. ⚠️ Friendly owner who quickly recognizes regulars. All food is prepared with accute attention. There is a good mix of Japanese food and food westerners are familiar with. The menu is Japanese, but the new online order system helps with English, and the male owner speaks decent English too. Good variety of both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks too. My only complaint is the place allows indoor smoking, which is common for casual night eateries in Japan, but the food is worth coming despite that. Note: the owner is the only one cooking, so food service can be slow when busy, especially as everything is made when the order comes in, not prepared like fast food places, which allows for a fresh meal when served. Only ordered three items and 2 drinks. Water was priced at 300yen. Tamago was super salty when it’s usually a little sweet and the karage was burnt but still served to us. The yaki udon was not bad taste wise but way too oily. Overall our meal for two was 4100 yen, including the mandatory drinks and appetiser per pax. I’m not one to waste food but we only managed to stomach 20% of the meal.

Initially decided to come here looking at the Google photos of their chicken Namban and potato salad which looked good, however after arriving we were told that they changed their menu completely. Nothing posted on Google reviews was found...

I don’t recommend this place at all and will not be going back.

Not only is there a cover charge in the evening, but each person is also required to order both a food item and a drink. For such a casual restaurant, this caught me off guard. And no one told me beforehand. In the end, we had to pay table service charges. Any notice in advance would have helped and we wouldn’t eat there.

The food was fine, but absolutely not worth the extra charges.
