Genki Isobe provided a kaiseki meal for my daughter and I that was a once in a lifetime experience. I discovered Isobe Restaurant through a friend at work. The chef and owner, Mr. Isobe prepared a phenomenal meal that resulted in a culinary delight that I know I will never again experience unless i return to Isobe's. It was a kaiseki meal. Each dish contained yuba (tofu skin) a restaurant specialty. Every dish was amazing. A pure culinary delight. What was equally humbling was the fact that each dish was prepared with our food sensitivities in mind. My coworker informed Genki of our religious dietary restrictions, and Genki met each one by creating small dishes that were a pure culinary delight created by a chef with genius and a love of his craft. The restaurant sits at the edge of a beautiful garden (Maruyama Park). We walked past a temple and a shrine. This experience was truly the best I had in Japan. We are planning a return trip, and Isobe will be on our must do list to obtain another reservation! Next time, we will visit with the entire family.

Great yuba at an affordable price. One of the important things to do in Kyoto is to try traditional yuba cuisine - and being tofu, it's satisfying but not heavy. This restaurant is in a quiet but convenient location, perfect after a walk through Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine. The interior is a little dated but I've been coming here for a few years and the food never disappoints. There's an English menu and food display out the front so you can see what you're getting.

It was an incredible experience. This establishment transmits the Japanese tradition from the interior decoration to the food served. We chose a menu with dishes made of yuba (kind of tofu). Everything we tried was delicious and the presentation was very beautiful. The service was top notch. We were 100% satisfied. In terms of cost/benefit, this restaurant is one of the best.
