Traditional lunch service and pretty garden with a confectionary established in 1693. Very traditional room where you take off your shoes to enter. There are English menus (ask for “eggo” menu) and wonderful friendly staff. Don’t let language barrier coming into the resteraunt intimidate you just use Google translate and enjoy! All the lady was explaining to us is that they had a big group so our food may take 10 minutes to serve, and it came even faster. reserve 4 days in advance at least for nice set menu or bigger groups. But we walked on easily no wait. One of our favorite meals in Kyoto :) And just an 15 minute bus from Gion area. We enjoyed their summer special cold duck soba their famous chicken udon and cold sake each.Plus strawberry (ichigo) kakigori shaved ice. Absolutely lovely and quite affordable. A mix of Japanese locals and business meetings and families and...

Their desserts are also quite good and the chestnut mont Blanc deserves special mention for it's incredible smooth and nutty flavors. Looking out on a zen inspired garden while eating an incredible meal is hard to match given the very reasonable prices and quiet atmosphere. There is a cute sweet shop nearby (a few houses down) that is also a fun visit before or after. Door to restaurant doesn't always look open, but slide it open and you'll step in into a different world. For those from the west like us, make sure you understand some of japanese courtesy rules...

The building and restaurant are part of the original Yatsuhashi store and company, and there is a Yatsuhashi store across the street as well. If you’re looking for a nice, traditional Japanese restaurant for lunch, this is a great...
