The Kyoto Handicraft Center in Kyoto city is a great place to find a really cool Japanese souvenir for those hard to find friends and family or maybe just for yourself! They have handmade items here that I didn’t see anywhere else on our two week trip.
My wife and I came to the center on a tour to see a tea ceremony by a tea master in one of their multipurpose rooms. It was a lovely experience and we learned how to make, drink and host a proper tea ceremony. After that lovely experience, we checked out their wonderful store with their handcrafted items, books, swords, etc.
They sell a wide selection of Japanese swords made by one of only two people who make katanas in Kyoto. They have replicas as well as more expensive (real) swords. There were also some really interesting miniature helmets, nice robes, as well as many other interesting things. I bought a sword set and they shipped it to me in Canada. I just received it today and I was very happy with their shipping service! Definitely worth checking out, as it’s a souvenir that I will cherish...

We also have two dining areas where small groups and large groups can relax and enjoy their meals. We will propose meals that will give you a taste of Kyoto and the four seasons, and prepare meals to suit your preferences. The handmade experience is not only enjoyed by students and students who use the opportunity of their school trip to get closer to traditional crafts through handmade experiences, but also by families and friends who enjoy spending time together and making memories in between sightseeing in Kyoto. The hotel opened in 1967 in the Higashiyama/Okazaki area, which is popular with tourists all year round, with many cultural exchange facilities including art museums and zoos, as well as many historic shrines and temples. Since then, we have been patronized by customers from all over the world. In October 2007, we received permission from the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) to open the Visit Japan Information Center. We will support your comfortable trip by providing transportation information and tourist consultations. Please come to our hotel, where we have collected the "good things" of Japan and Kyoto, to make memories of your own trip, or to share your trip with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you. (From the company's website)
In addition to shopping, the hotel offers the experience of making nine types of traditional crafts related to Kyoto. A wide range of experiences are available for both children and adults, such as making your own scented sachets by blending fragrant wood chips to your liking, making your own shichimi, making Kyoto tops, and painting clay bell dolls. How about making some memories in Kyoto? We also offer English support, so overseas visitors can participate with peace of mind. (Kyoto Tourism Navi)
It has been around for a long time, but even some people in Kyoto don't know about it. I went there to buy souvenirs for my homestay when I...
Read moreWe bought two items from this centre (Japanese doll & embroidered scene framed) and had them posted home to Australia. Although the items were not cheap they were priced competitively and we knew that they were genuine. Both items arrived within a week of being posted, undamaged. They were both extremely well packed which protected them despite the poor handling by the Australia Post carrier. We were very pleased with both the service at Kyoto, the items and the delivery. Staff at Kyoto were also kind enough the write an explanation regarding the embroidery scene. I would recommend a visit, like most things resource your prices, but from our experience we would certainly recommend this centre. Also pay visit to the Blue Parrot Antique shop across the road, great range of antiques at...
