ryu no hige — Restaurant in Kyoto

I had to share this review despite my misgivings of sharing something so harsh. But here we go…

This was one of the stranger dinners I’ve had in Japan and maybe anywhere. The place was completely empty on a busy night. And although it’s inside of a hotel, not a guest was to be found inside the restaurant. The ambience was austere at best. It felt like a diner meets a school cafeteria. The design of the meal was based on the Kaiseki multi course experience. It was described as a French fusion. But that would be insulting French cuisine.

The courses got worse one after the next. Food was undercooked, overcooked or in some weird gelatinous configuration that vaguely resembled what it was supposed to be. And although they had a clever way of connecting each course on the menu. The food was truly abysmal. So much so that it became nearly a foot race between my wife and I to our hotel room bathroom.

I deeply regretted this meal despite the kind service and effort. But the chefs need to stop doing this to...

秋の空より天高く上る美味み‼️震える演出はレストランで秋の京都一周❗️🍁 ⁡ ガラス張りの店内は明るく素敵✨ 席に着くと、テーブルの上にはトランクが1つ。 お店の方が一言。 「本日のコースは京都を巡るツアー仕立て。 今日は京都の名所へご案内します。 大人の遠足気分を味わって、 素敵な旅をお過ごしください。」 ⁡ 「どうぞトランクを開けて旅の身支度を」 トランクを開けると…！ ピンク色の旅のしおりが…🥺 透明の焼印と小さな小さなドライフラワーが可愛すぎる💐 旅のしおりにはこれからでてくるお料理が案内されています。 グラスと赤いナプキンを取り出します。 ⁡ 前菜 【実りの秋を知らせる魅惑の層 待ち焦がれた初紅葉とmarronの薫り】 ⁡ 「旅のはじまりはお弁当」 と言われるがまま、もえぎ色の風呂敷をほどいて蓋を開けます。 中には青紅葉と試験管。 試験管の中は二層になっていて ◯下はフォアグラのプリン。 滑らかでスープみたい✨ ◯上はポルチーニのムース✨ 秋を感じるふわっと軽いムースです。 石庭のようにちょこんと座っているのは ◯栗のラム酒と安納芋のクリーム すごいラム酒きいてる！ ⁡ 八寸 【先ずは八瀬大原の瑠璃光院へとご案内 煌びやかで雅な逆さ紅葉】 ⁡ 瑠璃光院は黒いテーブルにお庭の紅葉が鏡のように映り込んで、写真を撮ると上下に紅葉が広がることで有名なスポット。 その様子を見立てた白と黒のお皿に、カラフルに彩られたお料理が彩られ、まるで現代アートのようです✨ 折紙で折られたリスさんを広げると、お皿に盛られたお料理の内容が書かれています😆 楽しい♪ ⁡ ◯鴨ロース ずっしりジューシー。 ◯カボチャのカステラ 甘みを抑えた滑らかかムース ◯栗麩のオランダ煮 洋風のおでんのよう ◯ベーコンとオリーブのガトー クセのない滑らかさでベーコンとオリーブの旨み ⁡ ◯トマトのコンポート フレッシュ！ ◯無花果の梅酒漬け ◯生ハムのグジュール ◯オレンジとマンゴーのスフェール プチュっと飛び出してしまった💦 スイーツみたいなプレートです。 ⁡ お造り 【次は嵯峨野トロッコ列車に乗って 紅葉狩りへ出発】 ⁡ トロッコ列車を模した長くて細い器を包み込む紅葉の包み紙を解くとお造り二種と汲み上げ湯葉豆腐。 急に和食‼️ ◯白身魚は 肉厚で、酢味噌がきいてる！ ◯マグロは赤味噌と麹味噌で。 お造りも新鮮だし味噌と合わせるなんて勿体無いくらいだけど、これが合うんだな〜 ⁡ 焼き物 【次は壮大な自然との調和 青蓮院へご案内 月夜の幻に魅せられて庭に広がる青い星空】 ⁡ 可愛い〜❣️絵本みたい‼️😍 秋になるとライトアップされる青蓮院をイメージして、黒いプレートに赤パプリカで紅葉が描かれています。 「それでは夜の幻想的な紅葉をお楽しみ下さい」 プレートの対角線上、角っこには2つのお料理。 ◯ 鰆の瞬間スモーク 白ワインのソース 燻製のかおり！✨ レアさ加減最高で、ソースが絶品‼️ ◯ オランデーズスフレ...

Fascinating dining experience. Our lunch was themed around love shrines in Kyoto. The courses were very beautiful and our server explained each in English and Japanese. I think this is perfect for a first meal in Kyoto, it gets you ready for starting to see the sights! The taste of the food is good, though some of the dishes weren’t my favorite.
